On 29th June, 1934, Chancellor Adolph Hitler, accompanied by the Schutzstaffel (SS), arrived at Wiesse, where he personally arrested the leader of the Strum Abteilung (SA), Ernnst Roehm. During the next 24 hours 200 other senior SA officers were arrested on the way to Wiesse. Many were shot as soon as they were captured but Hitler decided to pardon Roehm because of his past service to the movement. However, after much pressure from Hermann Goering and Heinrich Himmler, Hitler agreed that Roehm should die. At first Hitler insisted that Roehm should be allowed to commit suicide but, when he refused, Roehm was shot by two SS men. (Spartacus.schoolnet.co)
Later, Hitler delivered a speech at the Reichstag in which he justified the murders of his rivals saying:
“If anyone reproaches me and asks why I did not resort to the regular courts of justice, then all I can say is this: In this hour I was responsible for the fate of the German people, and thereby I became the supreme judge of the German people. It was no secret that this time the revolution would have to be bloody; when we spoke of it we called it ‘The Night of the Long Knives.’ Everyone must know for all future time that if he raises his hand to strike the State, then certain death is his lot.”
The Night of the Long Knives is seen by many as the turning point where Hitler made it clear that he was above the law and the supreme leader of the German people.

Prominent Scientist Warns of HPV Vaccine Dangers
Independent health researcher Grace Filby, who won a Churchill Fellowship for her research into phage therapy, is calling on the government for more research into the possible side-effects of the HPV vaccine that is currently being given to teenage girls. Filby believes that not enough is known about the effects of the vaccine on children with pre-existing medical conditions and weakened immune systems. She says, "We simply do not know whether the vaccine interacts with other medication or medical conditions, and the manufacturers have not studied it yet. This could be a very valid reason why some families and schools might hesitate or opt out." She has this week written to UK education ministers and health officials calling for urgent small-scale independent studies that would highlight any health problems stemming from vaccinations already carried out.

But it has now emerged that in early August, England's three exam boards asked Ofqual to adjudicate after they failed to reach agreement on setting comparable grade boundaries. The Times Educational Supplement claims that rival board Edexcel awarded C grades in a paper for one of its new science courses to pupils scoring only 20 per cent.

For the first 26 years of my life, I lived in a small Rhode Island town, Tiverton. All around me were odd-sounding names of ponds, streets, schools, rivers, and other locations: Nonquit, Pocasset, Conanicus, Sakonnet, Narragansett, Watuppa and others. Occasionally, the name Metacomet was seen, usually as the name of a used car lot or bar.
To me, these names were merely those designated to the area. There were hints that they originated from the Native American language of the Wampanoag Indians, but no in-depth explanation was given. In my 12 years of school in the area, the only Native American history we learned consisted of the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in which the Natives were portrayed as unkempt savages and the Pilgrims were depicted as very civilized.

North Korea is clamping down on mobile phones and long distance telephone calls to prevent the spread of news about a worsening food crisis, according to the United Nations investigator on human rights for the isolated communist country.
In a report to the UN General Assembly, Vitit Muntarbhorn, a Thai law professor who has never been allowed to visit North Korea, said that its government is using public executions as a means of intimidating the population, and using spies to infiltrate and expose religious communities.
His report came two days after the World Food Programme said that two thirds of North Koreans do not have enough to eat, in the country’s worst crisis since as many as three million people died of famine a decade ago.

As we approach W's last day in office, on which I'm willing to bet you he issues some sweeping pardons of crimes he himself authorized, an act already recommended to him by various voices in the corporate media, we also approach, of course, the dates before and/or after those pardons on which congressional committees may hold hearings to whine about the matter.
I actually think Congress should hold hearings, and hold them as soon as possible, but not just to speechify, rather to take serious steps to prevent something brand new in American government: a president pardoning himself and/or pardoning his subordinates for crimes he instructed them to commit, crimes for which they have, in most cases, not yet even been charged, much less convicted and sentenced.

Gary McKinnon Being Swept Under The Carpet
Below is an email sent my Gary's mum showing how it is not just Gary that is being extradited to the US for things that arent even a crime in the UK whilst the Crown prosecution service stand idly by doing nothing.
Where is Shami, Chakrabarti, Gareth Crossman and David Davis???
Why arent they doing something about it?

Thank you Noel, we won't give up. As you so rightly said, this is also about the civil liberties of U.K citizens and I'm now joining forces with other people facing extradition for non violent crimes.
Brian Howe and his family are virtually under house arrest with their four young daughters, between the couple, they sign at the police station three times every day and are under curfew from 8pm to 8am every single day.
They were legally selling chemicals including iodene which was all perfectly legal in this country but as some Americans bought the iodene and Red something or other (which was legal to sell here) and some American people made a drug called Crystal Meths, the Howes are being extradited.
His 29 year old wife is suicidal and suffering from severe depression and Brian offered to accept a plea bargain so that his wife could be left with the children (although he believes he's innocent) but the Americans refused this because Brians wife would not give evidence against him.
They have an online petition people can sign.
Gary's solicitor is now representing a young North London Jewish man is now facing extradition for legally selling electrical components online as the Americans say that people abroad could use some of the components to make bombs.
This young Jewish man is Iranian, so an easy target.
Our CPS are standing aside and not prosecuting, so that they can leave it wide open for the Americans to extradite them.

Merck is trying to market its cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil to women who may not benefit from it after U.S. sales shrank in July and August, according to a Bloomberg article
As pointed out by Jim Edwards over at Bnet "Merck is simply adjusting its strategy to the inevitable grind of numbers: As more girls get the shot, its remaining market declines — and thus Merck must target increasingly marginally profitable populations"
Even though 75% of the most effective market for Gardasil (teenage girls from 13 to 17 years old) has not received a dose of Gardasil, Merck would rather focus on women ages 19 to 26, who have been less likely to get the shots than try to go after teenagers.
"We see tremendous opportunity," said Bev Lybrand, Merck's senior vice president of vaccines. "We have a number of programs under way to get after these women."
Gardasil has difficulties that marketing must overcome. These include price, effectiveness, and possible dangerous side effects (the CDC said it has received reports of 21 deaths and almost 10,000 side effects in women following vaccination). The latter is an especially difficult hurdle if you have to target mothers of teenage girls rather than the girls themselves -- it's taboo and even illegal in some cases to market to minors under the age of 18. For example, Merck cannot do direct mail or email marketing to teenagers by collecting names and postal/email addresses. That needs parental permissions.

It was just a drill, but play-acting of a germ warfare attack this summer showed how many ways the nation (the USA) is not ready.
The enactment went as follows:Patients with a mysterious illness began appearing at Oklahoma City hospitals in early December of 2002, with fever, weakness, malaise, and an aggressive rash which in two or three days developed pus. Except for the other symptoms they could have been severe cases of acne.Soon the small number of initial patients grew to 20; others sprouted across the state as well as in Georgia and Pennsylvania. Most living practicing physicians have never treated a clinical case of this mysterious disease, which fit no current pattern of development, defying differential diagnosis. Days later the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made the diagnosis: smallpox.It is a disease not seen in the United States since 1949…and not in the world since 1980. It is an extinct malady. Its only vestiges are two small cultures held in labs in the United States and Russia. This is certainly an intentional, engineered outbreak of the disease…bioterrorism!
By the end of the month there were projected to be 30,000 cases nationwide.In the weeks before the outbreak, tensions were rising between China and Taiwan. An outbreak of foot and mouth disease on Taiwan was devastating the swine industry; some blamed China. 1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate near renewable food sources.
2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.
3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's
.4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)
5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in bulk.
6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll have a lot of time on your hands.
7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Student Arrested for “Terrorist” English Class Story
A George Rogers Clark High School junior arrested Tuesday for making terrorist threats told LEX 18 News Thursday that the “writings” that got him arrested are being taken out of context.
Winchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole’s home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.
Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.

Sheriff Begins Taking Away Concealed Weapons Permits
The Sheriff's Department has begun the process of revoking hundreds of concealed weapon permits across Orange County.
This week, department officials confirmed that 146 letters have been sent out advising current license holders that their permits to carry firearms in public – called CCWs – are being revoked. There are currently 1,024 permit holders.

Passports Will Be Needed To Buy Mobile Phones
Everyone who buys a mobile telephone will be forced to register their identity on a national database under government plans to extend massively the powers of state surveillance.
Phone buyers would have to present a passport or other official form of identification at the point of purchase. Privacy campaigners fear it marks the latest government move to create a surveillance society.
A compulsory national register for the owners of all 72m mobile phones in Britain would be part of a much bigger database to combat terrorism and crime. Whitehall officials have raised the idea of a register containing the names and addresses of everyone who buys a phone in recent talks with Vodafone and other telephone companies, insiders say.
The move is targeted at monitoring the owners of Britain’s estimated 40m prepaid mobile phones. They can be purchased with cash by customers who do not wish to give their names, addresses or credit card details.

Couple Trying to Save Grandchildren From Council Care Banned From Seeing Them... After Speaking To MoS
Social workers have cancelled a pre-arranged access meeting between a couple and the grandchildren they are trying to rescue from council care.
Their decision follows revelations of the family’s plight in last week’s Mail on Sunday.
Graham and Gail Curlew received a letter on Monday – the day after we published their story – suspending the meeting with the children, a girl aged eight and a boy, six, that had been due to take place yesterday.
The letter, from Norfolk County Council, signed by Graham Wright, its area director for children’s services, criticised the Curlews, from Sheringham in Norfolk, for involving in the case their local MP, Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb, and journalist Anne Atkins, a family friend and who wrote last week’s report in this newspaper.
The council had originally ruled earlier this month that the couple would no longer be allowed to see their grandchildren. But that decision was rescinded at a meeting two weeks ago attended by the Curlews, Mr Lamb and Anne Atkins, where it was agreed they should be given access, albeit under the supervision of social workers.

The plumbers, electricians and carpenters will be issued with a checklist of signs to look out for, including ‘unexplained bruising’ and ‘scalds’. Training will last just half a day.
But critics believe the use of workers untrained in such a highly complex field could backfire. They say that children who are at real risk could be overlooked because social workers with already bulging caseloads could be bombarded with baseless complaints.

Mother nature, it emerged this week, appears to have blessed the island with enough oil reserves to vault it into the ranks of energy powers. The government announced there may be more than 20bn barrels of recoverable oil in offshore fields in Cuba's share of the Gulf of Mexico, more than twice the previous estimate.
If confirmed, it puts Cuba's reserves on par with those of the US and into the world's top 20. Drilling is expected to start next year by Cuba's state oil company Cubapetroleo, or Cupet.

President Sarkozy of France travels to Camp David for a summit with George Bush today determined to take advantage of what he sees as Europe’s leadership over the financial crisis.
Mr Sarkozy has told close advisers and ministers that he is going to move fast, on behalf of Europe, to recast the rules of international finance.
“He is not going to let the Americans get in his way,” said one of his team.
At the same time he appears to be engaged in an unseemly scramble for the credit for co-ordinating Europe’s response, telling allies that the EU is “lucky” France currently holds the presidency

Settlers Burn 3,000 Olive Trees In Southern Neblus
Fires set by Israeli settlers in southern Nablus olive groves are up this year, reports journalist Ali Daraghmeh. "This year settlers south of the city of Nablus burned about 3,000 olive trees. The settlers are also burning cars and beating farmers. This week four people were hospitalized."
Ghassan, a local official in municipal affairs, described "masked gunmen attacking farmers in 33 basin areas in Salfit and 39 in Nablus."Israeli settlements in the West Bank are most often built on hills and then spread down. Palestinian agricultural lands are afflicted from the initial land confiscation to the eventual threat in the basin areas. Fields just beyond those overtaken are particularly dangerous.

China To Help Pakistan Out Of Economic Crisis
China has assured Pakistan of help to get out of its economic crisis, the Pakistani ambassador to Beijing said on Friday, but he gave no details and did not say if China had agreed to urgently needed new loans.
Pakistan, a nuclear-armed U.S. ally, is struggling to come to grips with a financial crisis. Islamabad's rapidly dwindling foreign reserves are at their lowest level since 2002.

America's National Strategy of Global Intervention
Last June the U.S. Department of Defense unexpectedly issued a new version of its National Defense Strategy. It was unexpected because there will be a new administration in Washington in January which might be expected to issue a statement of its own ideas about military strategy.
Some in Washington speculated that Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, only recently named to that office, a man who gets along with Democrats as well as Republications, might be bidding to keep his job under a new administration.
The new statement lacks the Bush administration’s unilateralism and triumphalism (as if there were anything left to be triumphal about), but it foresees a “Long War” of “promoting freedom, justice and human dignity by working to end tyranny, promote effective democracies and extend prosperity; and confronting the challenges of our time by leading a growing community of democracies.”All that is straight Bush doctrine, drawn from his second inaugural address and Condoleezza Rice’s policy statement last summer predicting decades of a “new American realism” of “nation-building” to conquer “extremism.” By now the “Long War,” realistic or not, will have become orthodoxy for most of the Washington defense and strategic studies community.
The noteworthy thing about this National Defense Strategy statement is that it says nothing directly about American national defense. It is a strategy for intervening in other countries, and preventing others from blocking or resisting American interventions.
