Hospitals Push Tdap Vaccine On New Mothers

The National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, which is associated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently released a report outlining recommendations for a vaccine that should be given to women who have just given birth.

Forrest General is currently the only hospital in south Mississippi that is following these new vaccination recommendations. This vaccine, called a Tdap vaccine, immunizes for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, three illnesses that can prove fatal to infants and even adults. It is recommended that adult and adolescent women of childbearing age receive the Tdap vaccine before contraception, in order to reduce the risk of pertussis during pregnancy.
