Russia Warns Against Iran Sanctions

Russia and China have warned against attempts to lobby for further sanctions against Iran in a UN Security Council vote due to be held on Tehran's nuclear program.

"We are against forcing the voting process," Interfax news agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying in Beijing on Friday.

The United States has been stepping up efforts to persuade veto-wielding UNSC members Russia and China to agree to a new round of sanctions against Iran.'

Russia's Top Weatherman's Blow to Climate Change Lobby as he Says Winter in Siberia May be COLDEST on Record

In a new blow to the climate change lobby, Russia's top weatherman today announced that the winter now drawing to a close in Siberia may turn out to be the coldest on record.

'The winter of 2009-10 was one of the most severe in European part of Russia for more than 30 years, and in Siberia it was perhaps the record breaking coldest ever,' said Dr Alexander Frolov, head of state meteorological service Rosgidromet.'

Georgia: Simulating War Or Provoking It?

On the evening of March 13 Georgia’s Imedi television channel ran a 30-minute prime time “simulated” newscast about a Russian invasion of the South Caucasus nation complete with a report that the country’s mercurial (if not megalomaniacal) president – Mikheil Saakashvili – had been assassinated.

The show was aired “by the Imedi TV’s weekly program Special Report, which started just a couple of minutes before 8pm – the time when Imedi TV runs its usual news bulletin Kronika.” (Unless otherwise indicated, all quotes are from Civil Georgia reports of March 14, 2010.)

The Special Report’s regular news anchor, Natia Koberidze, opened the program with the words: “Have you ever thought about the end of Georgian statehood? Probably yes, because we have already seen this threat in the summer of 2008".'

Hoax Broadcast Causes Panic in Georgia

Panic gripped Georgia after a pro-government television station broadcast a fake report that Russian tanks had entered the capital Tbilisi.

The fake report, which was broadcast on Saturday by the pro-government station Imedi TV, said that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili had been killed in the Russian invasion.

Imedi TV later stated that the aim of the broadcast was to show the "real threat" of how events may unfold.'

NATO Waging Undeclared War on Russia: Moscow

Moscow says the United States and NATO's inaction in fighting drug trafficking in Afghanistan, translates into an "undeclared war" against Russia.

Russia's ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin slammed the alliance for its loose surveillance on drug trafficking out of Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported on Friday.

Afghanistan produces some 90 percent of the world's opium. The Afghan drugs enter Russia and Central Asia before reaching Western Europe.'

Vladmir Putin Forging Ahead With Vision of Eurasian Empire

Were Ukraine to sign up, there would be a common economic space encompassing the “Big Four” republics of the Soviet era, with a combined population of 213 million and stretching from the European Union to China. Its political, military and economic centre would be in Moscow, where Mr Putin is expected to reclaim the presidency in 2012 for up to 12 more years.

A common currency would give him an economic lever to challenge the US dollar and the euro by creating a regional reserve currency. Finance Minister Aleksei Kudrin stated last month that Russia, as the world’s largest energy supplier, may soon sell oil in roubles.'

Anti-Iran Plot Failing, Israeli Envoy Laments

Israel's UN ambassador says the prospects for imposing crippling sanctions on Iran are “grim” because Russia and China insist on diplomacy to solve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.

"The chances now seem grim regarding sanctions that will be crippling," AFP quoted Gabriela Shalev as saying on Tuesday.

She said Russia and China, which both have a veto at the UN Security Council, "are still looking to the diplomatic track" and appear reluctant to back a new round of tough sanctions on Iran.'

Destabilization in the North Caucasus: Georgian President Saakashvili 'Ready for New War'?

Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili and his supporters are ready to start a new war and plunge the country into chaos again. A statement to that effect came from the leader of the opposition “Democratic Movement – United Georgia” Party, ex-Speaker of parliament Nino Burdjanadze.

The party’s statements circulated on Saturday say the Georgian parliament is acting behind Russia’s back preparing an address to the people and legislatures of North Caucasian republics which may destabilize the situation in the North Caucasus given the current circumstances.

The opposition statements say Saakashvili is pushing the country into war because he is fully aware that his days as president are over but he prefers to be expelled by Russia rather than toppled by the people of Georgia.'

The Bush Family's Project Hammer

Russia Commits to Deliver S-300 System to Iran

The Kremlin's powerful Security Council says Moscow sees no reason to delay the sale of its S-300 anti-aircraft systems to Tehran.

"There is the signed contract that we must fulfill, but supplies have not started yet. This deal is not restricted by any international sanctions, because these are merely defensive weapons," Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Vladimir Nazarov told the Interfax news agency on Sunday.'

Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has declared that there is no evidence to indicate that Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons.

"We have no information that Iran is working on the creation of a nuclear weapon," Reuters quoted Putin as saying when asked by a reporter if Iran was close to making an atomic bomb.'

All Russia's TV Stations Now Under State Control

Campaigners accused the Kremlin today of killing off the last vestiges of independent television in Russia, after it emerged that the two remaining private TV channels would come under state control next year.

REN TV and St Petersburg's Fifth Channel, which are sometimes critical of the authorities, have until now been Russia's last semi-independent private TV stations. Although neither can be described as radical, they are the only channels on which opposition politicians can air their views, or where dissenting voices may be heard.

Russia Prepares to Back Iran Sanctions

President Medvedev gave the first hint yesterday that Russia was prepared to perform a significant policy U-turn and support US moves for sanctions against Iran.

Speaking in Moscow, the Russian leader went out of his way to be more conciliatory with the West before his visit this month to the US where he will attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York and the G20 summit of economic powers in Pittsburgh. A key issue on the agenda will be efforts by America, Britain and France to impose economic sanctions against Tehran if the regime does not agree to curb its nuclear programme.
