Fingerprinting Charge To Double Cost Of ID Card

The likely cost of obtaining one of the Government's proposed ID cards has doubled from £30 to £60.
The job of taking fingerprints and other biometric data is being outsourced to private firms, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith confirmed yesterday. She said this would save the Government £1billion.
But there was indignation after it was disclosed that the private firms will send the bill for the work undertaken not to the Government but to individual applicants.
