Some households owing hundreds of pounds are saddled with debts in five figures as a result of such action, The Times has learnt.

Pensioners and poor families have even had to sell their homes to meet huge legal costs arising from bank-rupcy orders that dwarf the original debt, according to Citizens Advice.

Dozens of civilians killed in Gaza: Palestinians reported Tuesday that dozens of people have been killed since the afternoon hours in three separate Israel Defense Force strikes on civilian targets.
Sources in the Strip reported that at least 40 civilians were killed in an attack near a United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA) school in northern Gaza. A UN spokesman said 30 Palestinians were killed in the strike.

The number of U.S. children being home-schooled has steadily increased during recent years and shows no sign of declining, a statistician says.
There was a 74 percent increase in the number of home-school children between 1999 and 2007.
Gail Mulligan of the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics said a variety of reasons led to 1.5 million children being primarily educated in U.S. homes in 2007, USA Today said Monday.
Among the home-schooling reasons given by parents in a 2007 survey were moral and religious factors, along with concerns about family time and finances.

Greek Policeman Gunned Down By AK-47 Toting Protestors?

A policeman was shot and seriously injured in Athens early today as protesters sprayed automatic fire at officers guarding the Culture Ministry, prompting fears of renewed anarchist violence.

Fizzy drinks sold by Coca-Cola in Britain have been found to contain pesticides at up to 300 times the level allowed in tap or bottled water.
A worldwide study found pesticide levels in orange and lemon drinks sold under the Fanta brand, which is popular with children, were at their highest in the UK.
The research team called on the Government, the industry and the company to act to remove the chemicals and called for new safety standards to regulate the soft drinks market.

Israeli forces fired in the immediate vicinity of three hospitals in the Gaza Strip on Monday, witnesses and medical personnel told Ma'an. The Al-Wafa Hospital eastern Gaza Strip received warning that they would be shelled, but the hospital administration and staff refused to evacuate on account of the number of injured people being treated there. Some of the wounded have been injured so severely that they cannot be safely transferred.

More Aboriginal Children Put Into Care Now Than During 'Stolen Generations'

There are now more than 4,500 Aboriginal children in state care in New South Wales (NSW), compared to 1,000 in foster homes, institutions and church-run missions in the state when the forced removals policy ended in 1969.

Coalition troops have been acting under a series of Security Council resolutions authorizing the continuing occupation of Iraq. But this year, Bush allowed the UN mandate to expire on December 31 without requesting a renewal. At precisely one second after midnight, Congress' authorization of the war expired along with this mandate.

A council spent £25,500 on lunches for just 85 staff members taking part in a course on leadership skills.

Croydon Council paid a total of £306,000 for the workers to take part in the nine-day in-house training scheme. Of that sum, the budget for staff lunches was £300 a head – equivalent to £33.33 for each of the nine lunches. By comparison, a three-course fixed-price lunch at The Grill restaurant at London's Dorchester hotel costs £27.50.

The council would not say what food and drink was served, but Pam Parkes, divisional director of human resources, said: "I don't think it is expensive. Most people expect when they go on a course to have a tea or coffee. Tea is not cheap, we do not grow tea, we have to buy it. It does cost someone to make the lunches."

She added: "We strongly believe this is a cost-effective investment that will pay off in terms of expertise and savings in the medium to long term."

The AP photo above shows what appears to be a white phosphorus shell fired into Gaza, as was used by Israel in Lebanon.

White phosphorus is an indiscriminate killer that ignites once it is exposed to oxygen, producing such heat that it bursts into a yellow flame and produces a dense white smoke. It causes painful burn injuries to exposed human flesh, as discovered by Lebanon's Children at the hands of Israeli Phosphorus Bombs in 2006.

White Phosphorus is considered a chemical weapon by most governments around the world. Its use in civilian areas is banned by the Geneva Treaty of 1980. The United Nations considers such weapons illegal.

Police Set to Step Up Hacking of Home PCs

THE Home Office has quietly adopted a new plan to allow police across Britain routinely to hack into people’s personal computers without a warrant.

The move, which follows a decision by the European Union’s council of ministers in Brussels, has angered civil liberties groups and opposition MPs. They described it as a sinister extension of the surveillance state which drives “a coach and horses” through privacy laws.

The hacking is known as “remote searching”. It allows police or MI5 officers who may be hundreds of miles away to examine covertly the hard drive of someone’s PC at his home, office or hotel room.

TOWN HALL bosses are operating a private consultancy that has helped to increase their pay by more than 30% in four years.

Solace Enterprises, a recruitment company, is paid fees of about £20,000 by local councils to headhunt chief executives and recommend salary levels.

Its advice has contributed to burgeoning pay packets for chief executives, many of whom are now paid more than £150,000 a year. The company is wholly owned by the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (Solace), which represents town hall bosses. The company’s directors include a number of serving chief executives.

Children and pregnant women could be routinely vaccinated against chickenpox.

Options being considered by government advisers include combining the jab with the MMR triple vaccine, creating a four-in-one shot.
