UNIFIL: Israel Violating Resolution 1701

The head of UN forces in Lebanon accuses Israelis of unilaterally violating a UN resolution that ended the 33-day war against the Lebanese.

Head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Major-General Claudio Graziano criticized continued overflight of Israeli aircraft in Lebanon's airspace, and the refusal to provide a map of the zones riddled with Israeli mines and cluster bombs, a Press TV correspondent reported from Beirut. Graziano said Israel is turning a blind eye to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 -which demands Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in parallel with the deployment of UNIFIL and Lebanese soldiers throughout the South- and refuses to pull out its troops from the Lebanese part of southern al-Ghajar village.

Labour Warned Over Limits to Free Expression

The government has been accused of creating laws that have a chilling effect on freedom of expression in the UK in a sharply critical report from the United Nations' committee on human rights. The report calls for the reform of Britain's libel laws and controls introduced under recent terrorism laws.
The government's use of the Official Secrets Act to prevent issues of public interest being published is also condemned in an intervention from the UN which warns that public servants are being gagged even where national security is not at risk.
The criticisms are made as part of the committee's analysis of a report which the UK is required to submit to the UN every three years, appraising human rights in its jurisdiction.

Council worker emigrates 10,000 miles to Australia... but keeps his job in Cambridgeshire

When Mat Taylor heads off with his family for a new life Down Under, he will leave many precious things behind.
His £100,000-a-year council job, however, will be travelling with them.
Mr Taylor, 44, is to continue working for the local authority as its finance chief despite emigrating 10,000 miles away.
Under the extraordinary deal, Fenland District Council in Cambridgeshire is paying Mr Taylor for one day’s work a week – which works out, prorata at £20,000 a year.
He will continue to manage the council’s annual £18million budget and help any replacement ease into the role via video link and email, despite being in Adelaide with an eight-and-a-half hour time difference.
The details have emerged a few weeks after Suffolk County Council chief executive Andrea Hill – who earns £220,000, £30,000 more than the Prime Minister – claimed town hall bureaucrats deserved large salaries because their jobs were so ‘high risk’.
Mr Taylor, who is due to move in October after serving three months’ notice, yesterday defended the deal, insisting it was ‘difficult to replace a senior person straight away’.
He added: ‘We are trying to come up with an arrangement that does not cost too much money.
‘It seemed more sensible to keep my experience on board, rather than spend a lot of money on someone who had no knowledge of the workings of the council.’
But the TaxPayers’ Alliance said the plan was ludicrous.

US Military Will Stay in Georgia-Permanantly

US officials have said that their military presence in Georgia will now become permanent.
The American military has been training and equipping the Georgian army since the spring of 2002.
Having trained three battalions of Georgian soldiers, US military instructors were due to leave in March.
Georgia's new president-elect has set the removal of Russian troops still based in the country as a major priority for his government.
On Saturday the US ambassador to Georgia said they had decided to continue training the Georgian army in a full-time programme.US 'security guarantee'

The British government is taking extraordinary new powers to monitor everyone's emailing, internet browsing and phone calls

The recent report by the Interception of Communications commissioner, Sir Paul Kennedy notes that 519,260 requisitions of communications data from telephone companies and internet service providers were made in Britain last year. It is very mysterious who is doing the bulk of this spying, since no statistical breakdown is offered. But Sir Paul suggests the procedures may be a bit much for local authorities and things ought to be made easier for them.
The Home Office is busy doing just that. It is shortly to compel telecoms companies and internet service providers to keep details of all your emailing, browsing and phonecalls for up to 24 months. And it will specify in what form the information is to be kept. It is heartening that press and public have woken up to this snoopers' charter just as the final piece of the picture is hammered into place. It is being introduced in the form of a Statutory Instrument enforcing an EU directive - which means it is unlikely to be even debated in parliament and cannot be amended by our elected representatives. Perhaps that is why this is being released while MPs are on holiday.

President George W. Bush's pledge to send aid to Georgia means that the U.S. military will take control of the ex-Soviet state's ports and airports, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Wednesday.
"You have heard the statement by the U.S. president that the United States is starting a military-humanitarian operation in Georgia," Saakashvili said in a television address.
"It means that Georgian ports and airports will be taken under the control of the U.S. defense ministry in order to conduct humanitarian and other missions. This is a very important statement for easing tension."

Grandfather's Fury as Binmen Refused to Walk 18 INCHES to Collect His Wheelie Bin

grandfather today launched a scathing attack on council binmen who refused to walk 18 INCHES to collect his green waste.
Under council rules wheelie bins must be within one metre of the kerb before they are collected.
But Gordon Morris, 70, said his wheelie bin would block the pavement if he adhered to the rule, instead setting his bin 18 inches away on his driveway.
Refuse collectors, however, in Southwick, Wiltshire, refused to take the bin, as the rules had been broken.
Now, after a fight with the council Mr Morris has been granted special dispensation to place the bin with only the wheels on the pavement.
Bin crews will now only have to walk an extra nine inches to collect the waste from outside the £400,000 home Mr Morris has shares with his wife Marion, 67, for 21 years.

Iraq war veteran thrown off train after ticket row as conductor tells him: 'It's not as if you've taken a bullet'

A soldier returning from Iraq in full combat uniform was thrown off a train after a ticket inspector demanded proof he was eligible for an Armed Forces discount.
Rifleman Zachary Hoyland, 19, had been unable to pick up his Services railcard from barracks and was told the cheaper ticket he had been bought was not valid without it.
But the official refused to show any leniency, instead telling him: 'I don't know what you are complaining about.
'It's not as if you've taken a bullet or anything.'
With the help of a friendly passenger, Rifleman Hoyland had already managed to find the extra £50.50 he needed to pay the full fare.
But he was understandably outraged by the 'bullet' remark and swore at the ticket inspector - who, to the disbelief of other passengers, ordered him off the train at the next station.

The family settled down in Karachi and was never involved in any illegal activities. One day in March 2003, this talented young woman went missing with her three children when she was on her way to Karachi airport.
Dr. Siddiqui resurfaced this week after five years in a New York court as a "top al-Qaida terrorist." She was barely able to walk and speak, which was not surprising given the fact she had been recently involved in a "gun fight with FBI agents" in Afghanistan. The U.S. authorities claim Dr. Siddiqui was captured near the governor's offices in Ghazni, Afghanistan last month with a bag full of "suspicious liquids in tubes."

[As of August 8, 2008, the Associated Press states, “U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema postponed the trial indefinitely, questioning whether the government was overeager in filing charges.” –KS]What was your wake-up call, Dr. Roberts, to the fact that the current administration was determined to take away the civil liberties of Americans?Roberts: When they responded to 9/11 with the Patriot Act. That document was thick, and it would have taken months and months to prepare it, yet it came out shortly after the 9/11 attacks.Why does combating terrorism require an assault on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? It was clear to me that there was an undeclared agenda there.On the day of 9/11, I knew right away that something was wrong. I had been an engineering student at Georgia Tech, and things just didn’t add up. As I watched the towers fall, I could see that the buildings were blowing up from the top, at least initially. The airplanes caused asymmetrical damage, and I don’t think the planes were large enough to cause the buildings to topple. When you chop a tree down, it doesn’t blow up, it falls.The buildings were blowing up, not falling down.Then when I saw pictures of the alleged terrorists, most of them looked just like kids. They were small, and airplane passengers wouldn’t have hesitated to try to take them down. The average American male should have been able to take care of the hijackers. And how they could have fooled all of the intelligence agencies, outwit NORAD, and so on; it just didn’t make any sense. They were really after our civil liberties. That was their undeclared agenda. The effect is that no one has any protection under the law.

The American-armed and trained Georgian army swarmed into South Ossetia last Thursday, killing an estimated 2,000 civilians, sending 40,000 South Ossetians fleeing over the Russian border, and destroying much of the capital, Tskhinvali. The attack was unprovoked and took place a full 24 hours before even ONE Russian soldier set foot in South Ossetia. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Americans still believe that the Russian army invaded Georgian territory first. The BBC, AP, NPR, the New York Times and the rest of the establishment media has consistently and deliberately misled its readers into believing that the violence in South Ossetia was initiated by the Kremlin. Let's be clear, it wasn't. In truth, there is NO dispute about the facts except among the people who rely the western press for their information. Despite its steady loss of credibility, the corporate media continues to operate as the propaganda-arm of the Pentagon.Former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev gave a good summary of events in an op-ed in Monday's Washington Post:"For some time, relative calm was maintained in South Ossetia. The peacekeeping force composed of Russians, Georgians and Ossetians fulfilled its mission, and ordinary Ossetians and Georgians, who live close to each other, found at least some common ground....What happened on the night of Aug. 7 is beyond comprehension. The Georgian military attacked the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali with multiple rocket launchers designed to devastate large areas....Mounting a military assault against innocents was a reckless decision whose tragic consequences, for thousands of people of different nationalities, are now clear. The Georgian leadership could do this only with the perceived support and encouragement of a much more powerful force. Georgian armed forces were trained by hundreds of U.S. instructors, and its sophisticated military equipment was bought in a number of countries. This, coupled with the promise of NATO membership, emboldened Georgian leaders into thinking that they could get away with a "blitzkrieg" in South Ossetia...Russia had to respond. To accuse it of aggression against "small, defenseless Georgia" is not just hypocritical but shows a lack of humanity." Navy Relieves Commander of Air Recon Squadron

'The commander of a Navy air reconnaissance squadron that provides the president and the defense secretary the airborne ability to command the nation's nuclear weapons has been relieved of duty, the Navy said Tuesday.
Cmdr. Shawn Bentley was relieved of duty Monday by the Navy for loss of confidence in his ability to command, only three months after taking the job.
Capt. Brian Costello, commander of the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One, removed Bentley from command, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, a spokesman for the Naval Air Forces.
Brown said Bentley, who is based with the squadron at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, was removed after an investigation by the Navy's Inspector General. The Navy did not release any details about the investigation or about any possible allegations against Bentley.
But a source close to the investigation told The Associated Press that Bentley's removal regarded an undisclosed personal matter and was not related to the squadron's missions or duties. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter.'

Bush Sending Troops To Georgia

The US is sending troops to embattled Georgia in the form of a humanitarian aid exercise, President George Bush said.
Mr Bush said military planes would deliver supplies in a move which would put American forces in the heart of the region.

In the other picture, Bush appears to be having trouble remaining upright without considerable help. It takes three men to prop up the wobbly boozer-in-chief.

US Boasts of Laser Weapon's 'Plausible Deniability'

An airborne laser weapon dubbed the "long-range blowtorch" has the added benefit that the US could convincingly deny any involvement with the destruction it causes, say senior officials of the US Air Force (USAF).
The Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) is to be mounted on a Hercules military transport plane. Boeing announced the first test firing of the laser, from a plane on the ground, earlier this summer.
Cynthia Kaiser, chief engineer of the US Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate, used the phrase "plausible deniability" to describe the weapon's benefits in a briefing (powerpoint format) on laser weapons to the New Mexico Optics Industry Association in June.
John Corley, director of USAF's Capabilities Integration Directorate, used the same phrase to describe the weapon's benefits at an Air Armament Symposium in Florida in October 2007 As the term suggests, "plausible deniability" is used in situations where those responsible for an event could plausibly claim to have had no involvement in it.

The blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip over a year ago has left the entire population of 1.5 million Palestinians trapped with dwindling resources and an economy in ruins. Some 80 per cent of the population now depend on the trickle of international aid that the Israeli army allows in. This humanitarian crisis is man-made and entirely avoidable.Even patients in dire need of medical treatment not available in Gaza are often prevented from leaving and scores of them have died. Students who have scholarships in universities abroad are likewise trapped in Gaza, denied the opportunity to build a future. The Israeli authorities argue that the blockade on Gaza is in response to Palestinian attacks, especially the indiscriminate rockets fired from Gaza at the nearby Israeli town of Sderot. These and other Palestinian attacks killed 25 Israelis in the first half of this year; in the same period Israeli forces killed 400 Palestinians. However, the Israeli blockade does not target the Palestinian armed groups responsible for attacks – it collectively punishes the entire population of Gaza.

Town hall snoopers are demanding access to people's bedrooms, it has emerged.
Officials say they need to enter and inspect properties where a council tax discount is claimed.
Seven and a half million people - a large number of them pensioners - are entitled to 25 per cent off their annual bill because they live on their own.
The Conservatives warned that householders are being pressured into signing a declaration agreeing to an internal inspection of their homes in order to prove they really are single.

Council snoopers will be given even greater powers to pry into our phone, email and internet records - landing the taxpayer with a bill of almost £50million.
Town halls, along with the police, security services, health authorities and other public bodies, will have access to ' communication' records of anyone suspected of involvement in even the most minor crime.
The powers, which stem from an EU directive supposedly designed to catch terrorists, will even allow police to track down those who have told friends they are planning to harm themselves.
But it will cost the taxpayer £46.58million over eight years to compensate mobile phone companies and internet firms for storing and providing the data.
Critics said the measure took Britain a step closer to becoming a surveillance state.
Shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve said: 'Yet again the Government have proved themselves unable to resist the temptation to take a power quite properly designed to combat terrorism to snoop on the lives of ordinary people in everyday circumstances.
'It is typical of this Government that they also intend to make the taxpayer pay extra for the privilege.'

"You'd pretty much be staying home with the doors and windows battened down."The consensus among health experts is that a pandemic, or global epidemic, of influenza is inevitable. The last such pandemic, in 1918, killed between 40 and 100 million people.Because of the belief that a pandemic cannot be avoided, researchers are instead looking into ways to limit its effects. In the current study, researchers used a computer to model the hypothetical spread of flu pandemic in the city of Chicago under various containment scenarios. They found that a vigorous early response could reduce the infection rate by 80 percent."Depending on how fast it is spreading, it seems as though you really need to throw everything you can at it," Eubank said.Under the containment scenario, people infected with or exposed to the disease would be confined to their homes, and schools and day-care centers would be shut down, as would places of public gathering like bars, restaurants and theaters. The plan involves some high-tech tracking that is coming under fire from some groups. New York City is going to great lengths to make sure that bomb-toting terrorists can't reach us. "New York City is something special," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. "It's not just a very big city in this world. It is, in many senses, the iconic city. It represents Western Democracy. As part of the plan the NYPD is creating a huge buffer zone, working with cops in a 50-mile radius of the city. Officials in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Long Island are given radiation detectors to stop terrorists as far away from New York City as possible. Police also plan to track every vehicle that enters Manhattan. "We're going to be adding cameras as we go forward," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. That part of that plan calls for photographing and scanning license plates of cars and trucks at all bridges and tunnels. Even small ones like the Willis Avenue Bridge will also be used to detect radiation. "I don't think it's hyperbole to call this Big Brotherish," said Christopher Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union. "The New York City Police Department is creating a huge computer database of the movement of everyone in a vehicle in Manhattan."

What is being proposed here will not only complement all the good work that is currently going on, but will give the British truth movement as a whole a much sharper focus to work with. The most important thing is that whatever we do, we must not be hierarchical in our structure or thinking - if you have leaders and a pyramid command structure, you can be controlled by the Hidden Global Elite through their puppets and useful idiots … just as our MPs are. Certainly, it is the intention of those of us who are behind the UK Whole Truth Coalition that we simply act as an information clearing house with no control whatsoever over local groups. People who laugh and have fun show no fear … and it is the absence of fear that will turn you into an effective truth campaigner. Indeed, your positive and fearless attitude will put real fear into the guilty parties that you are seeking to expose.

2. Agree to meet at least twice a month and don’t get bogged down in formalities - take very brief minutes of the meetings to remind yourselves of the tasks that need doing but keep the meetings lighthearted with a minimum amount of formal ‘Chairing’. Find out the strengths of the people attending the meeting and encourage them all to get involved. All truthseekers have particular areas of interest - try and ensure that no one person dominates the meeting with their own area of expertise.

3. Set yourself the initial task of a basic political audit of the geographical area that you wish to cover. Check out the parliamentary constituency or constituencies in your area and who are the MPs. Find out who your MEP is and, if you are in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, who your other elected representatives are. Check out your local council to see which Party is in overall control, if any, and who are the key council officers and officials serving the councillors.

4. Using the internet, check the profile and voting behaviour of your MP. 6. Find out when your MP holds his or her surgery and go along - the ideal number is for three of you to go, two to politely ask the questions, the third to film the meeting with a camcorder. 7. Find out if any senior members of your MP’s political party are visiting your area - if they are, be ready to ambush them nicely with carefully prepared and polite questions, again filming this questioning for posterity. Entertaining or revealing responses will again be given a much wider airing with our help.

8. Also make contact with other similar campaigns in your area and again swap notes and so exert even more pressure on your elected representatives.

9. Contact your local newspapers and radio stations and brief them fully about your concerns. Suggest they do a feature on the grassroots truth movement spreading throughout your area and indeed the country. Take part in ‘phone-ins’ and make sure the ‘gatekeepers’ at the BBC have a hard time.

10. Thoroughly investigate organisations which would appear to be advancing the Hidden Global Elite’s agenda using stealth and deceit, especially the bogus ‘training’ charity ‘Common Purpose’ and the new ‘green’ grassroots organisation ‘Transition Towns’.

Terror laws should be used even more to snoop on the public, councils have been urged.
They have been told to 'make much more use' of rules originally brought in to catch bombers, to secretly access private phone bills and e-mails.
Local authorities have already come under fire for using the powers to investigate dog fouling, littering and parents thought to live outside school catchment areas.
Under the 2004 laws, councils can also apply to use covert tactics to 'spy' on employees who are believed to be skipping work or making fraudulent overtime claims.
The latest call, by 'Interception of Communications Commissioner' Sir Paul Kennedy, comes despite the number of spying requests from councils, police and other officials to phone and internet companies jumping from 350,000 in 2006 to more than 500,000 last year

As Hardtalk ended, Bakradze was asked if this confrontation with Russia would validate Georgia's bid to become a NATO member.

Bakradze made the clear statement "What is going on now in Georgia is a test case. This is about the Russian view of the New World Order versus the West view of the New World Order. If Russia wins it will validate the Russian view of the New World Order."

Uproar at Plan to Hold Inquests in Secret

Inquests that are deemed a risk to national security by the Government would be held in secret in future under proposed powers to come before the House of Lords this autumn.
The provisions, under a clause in the Counter-Terrorism Bill, allow the Home Secretary to stop a jury being summoned, replace the coroner with a government appointee and bar the public from inquests if it is deemed to be in the public interest.
It could be applied to inquests similar to those into the deaths of the weapons inspector David Kelly, “friendly-fire” military casualties or Diana, Princess of Wales, and Dodi Fayed. In future, inquests similar to that into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes, which is due to start next month with 44 police officers giving evidence anonymously, could also be subject to the secrecy clause.

Use of Contractors in Iraq Costs Billions, Report Says

WASHINGTON — The United States this year will have spent $100 billion on contractors in Iraq since the invasion in 2003, a milestone that reflects the Bush administration’s unprecedented level of dependence on private firms for help in the war, according to a government report to be released Tuesday.

Fury as pensioners targeted by graffiti-spraying vandals are told by council to clean up the mess themselves or face £1,000 fine

When a group of pensioners noticed graffiti had been sprayed on a wall at the bottom of their gardens, they hoped their council would do something to tidy it up.
So they were astounded when local authority bureaucrats threatened them with court action and a £1,000 fine unless they cleared it up themselves.
Some of the pensioners were reduced to tears after receiving stern letters from a Bury Council official warning them they had 21 days to remove the mess.

Dentist branded a terrorist after taking pictures of landmark shopping centre

When dentist Andrew Medina travelled to Birmingham for a photography exhibition, it was perhaps only natural that the amateur snapper should want to take a few pictures of his own.
But as he took pictures of one of the city's landmark buildings from the street outside, Dr Medina was approached by two security guards and accused of being a terrorist.
The dental surgeon told of his shock after the incident outside the imposing Mailbox development in the city centre.
The former Royal Mail sorting office is now a mix of designer shops, galleries, hotels, bars and restaurants, including the Malmaison hotel where Dr Medina was staying for the weekend with his girlfriend.
He said: 'I did what many thousands of people have done before: I walked out of the hotel and immediately, standing in the street I began to take photographs of this iconic Birmingham building, the building that myself and my girlfriend were happily paying to stay in.
'What happened next can only be described as horrible.'
He said he was confronted by two male security officers working for the Mailbox, and one of them proceeded to ask the 45-year-old dentist why he was taking photographs.
He described the demeanour of the security guard who questioned him as 'menacing' and said the other attempted to grab his camera. He was then told he was banned from entering the Mailbox.
Dr Medina, of Didsbury, South Manchester, said: 'I was then told that I must be a terrorist putting the Mailbox under surveillance

US planes make secret landings in Kenya

US military planes have been making secretive landings in Kenya in what is feared to be an effort to move terror suspects. The night landings by US military planes at Nairobi's Wilson Airport, carrying Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives, have raised suspicion among both local security agents and aviation authorities. The planes belonging to the Prescott Support Group, which has been accused in other parts of the world of being involved in the rendition of terror suspects and having strong links with the CIA, were allowed to operate in Kenya two months ago, even after the country's aviation authorities questioned the move.

The US is inventing wars aplenty these days.

Last week, Georgia launched a major military offensive against the rebel province South Ossetia , just hours after President Mikheil Saakashvili had announced a unilateral ceasefire. Close to 1,500 have been killed, Russian officials say. Thirty thousand refugees, mostly women and children, streamed across the border into the North Ossetian capital Vladikavkaz in Russia .

The timing - and subterfuge - suggest the unscrupulous Saakashvili was counting on surprise. "Most decision makers have gone for the holidays," he said in an interview with CNN. "Brilliant moment to attack a small country." Apparently he was referring to Russia invading Georgia , despite the fact that it was Georgia which had just launched a full-scale invasion of the "small country" South Ossetia, while Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was in Beijing for the Olympics. Twenty-seven Russian peacekeepers and troops have been killed and 150 wounded so far, many when their barracks were shelled by Georgian forces at the start of the invasion. Georgian State Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili rushed to announce that their mini-blitzkreig had destroyed ten Russian combat planes ( Russia says two) and that Georgian troops were in full control of the capital Tskhinvali.

War in the Caucasus: Towards a Broader Russia-US Military Confrontation?

During the night of August 7, coinciding with the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Georgia's president Saakashvili ordered an all-out military attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia.

The aerial bombardments and ground attacks were largely directed against civilian targets including residential areas, hospitals and the university. The provincial capital Tskhinvali was destroyed. The attacks resulted in some 1500 civilian deaths, according to both Russian and Western sources. "The air and artillery bombardment left the provincial capital without water, food, electricity and gas. Horrified civilians crawled out of the basements into the streets as fighting eased, looking for supplies." (AP, August 9, 2008). UK-Call over scope of Bill of Rights

A potential new Bill of Rights should go further than current human rights laws, parliamentarians said.
The cross-party Joint Committee on Human Rights said a new Bill should take in new areas of international human rights, and contain a specific guarantee of the right to asylum.
It should also maintain peoples' rights to a "healthy and sustainable environment", the committee added.
But MPs and peers rejected the idea that any rights spelt out in the document could depend on individuals living up to their responsibilities. "We conclude that a Bill of Rights and Freedoms should not include directly enforceable duties," their report said.
Instead, the basic duties of a citizen to have a "civic duty" to their community, the country and future generations could be spelt out in a preamble to the Bill. It also rejected the idea that any new law could be called a "British Bill of Rights" and proposed the name "UK Bill of Rights".

We need to study this piece of proposed legislation every step of the way especially the Conservatives version and input.
