Army 'Homeland' Troops Deploy on Oct 1st Against Americans
The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.
Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.
Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or manmade emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.
It is not the first time an active-duty unit has been tapped to help at home. In August 2005, for example, when Hurricane Katrina unleashed hell in Mississippi and Louisiana, several active-duty units were pulled from various posts and mobilized to those areas.

With all the chaos in the financial sector, it is easy to overlook the extremely disturbing information that quietly slipped into the mainstream news last week about the accelerating enforcement of the European Arrest Warrant System.

Schoolchildren could be given 'smart drugs' in a bid to boost brainpower
Schools will soon have to ensure all pupils have access to brain-enhancing 'smart drugs', according to officially funded experts.
They said teachers risk claims of bias against poorer children if they fail to give all pupils the same chance to take a new generation of pills which boost attention, concentration and memory.
Researchers predict that within a generation, cognition enhancing drugs - or 'cogs' - will be so advanced that parents and teachers will be able to 'manipulate biology' to enhance pupils' brainpower.
They said teachers risk claims of bias against poorer children if they fail to give all pupils the same chance to take a new generation of pills which boost attention, concentration and memory.

A chief constable who slashed crime by ordering officers to visit every single victim has been accused of wasting resources.
Roger Baker, the head of the Essex force, has been criticised in a watchdog’s report that claimed the hugely popular policy was not an efficient use of time.
Since Mr Baker took charge three years ago there have been 13,000 fewer victims of crime in the county and residents are delighted with his back-to-basics tactics.

Elderly people with dementia are 'wasting' the lives of those who have to care for them, one of the country's most influential experts on medical ethics said yesterday.Baroness Warnock said that for the old and sick who are contemplating dying, 'there is nothing wrong with feeling you ought to do so'.
Her remarks in an interview with a church journal were the first public suggestion from any expert with close links to Whitehall that euthanasia should not only be legal but that elderly people should be pressed towards death.

More than half of all Americans believe they have been helped by a guardian angel in the course of their lives, according to a new poll by the Baylor University Institute for Studies of Religion. In a poll of 1700 respondents, 55% answered affirmatively to the statement, "I was protected from harm by a guardian angel." The price tag for bailing out the US financial system may exceed $1.3 trillion dollars.
The purchase price for the mortgage lenders, Bear Stearns and AIG is over $300 billion. Now the assumption of the bad loans held by the banks may cost an additional trillion dollars. If the US Treasury created its own money, this might be bearable. But last I heard the system of money creation has not changed. I'm not an economist but it seems that the Fed is making a killing on our banking woes. The Fed is creating this "money" out of thin air and using it to buy US Treasury Notes and Bonds. The Treasury (i.e. US taxpayer) are on the hook for these securities plus interest. So while it looks like the Fed is riding to our rescue, in fact it is doing a very brisk business. And the US is falling so far into "debt" that political independence is a thing of the past. The central bankers appear to be trying to fend off a Depression. Perhaps they want to postpone the financial breakdown for reasons of their own. As a friend said, "I guess they want their shit bomb to explode after the election." If we see the Treasury as merely a front for the Fed, then the country seems to be increasingly owned by a foreign central banking cartel. They will own all those houses at bargain prices. A form of Communism (i.e. state ownership) is being created in response to a manufactured crisis. Formally the assets whill be owned by the state, but who controls the state?

How Dare They Spend Trillions on Corporate Welfare, Without...?
They're spending over a trillion dollars to rescue doddering, failed companies that deserve to die. How dare they-- the congress-- allow the Fed and the Whitehouse to spend so much without oversight. In times like we are experiencing tough, visionary leadership is needed and we're not seeing it.
The Whitehouse, with the help and support of the deservedly most unpopular congress in recent history, is planning a huge rescue for the finance industry. Reuters already estimates that rescue has exceeded a trillion dollars in cost. How dare they? How dare they give corporate welfare on such an obscene scale without a whimper of question or challenge from legislatrs on either side of the aisle, while a fraction of that budget could be used to provide health care to every American. How dare they throw good money after bad when a trillion dollar investment could subsidize hybrid cars for a hundred million people and just about eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. How dare they, when a trillion dollars-- and they're not finished yet-- could be invested at $5 million a company, in 200,000 energy saver start up companies. And instead, they save a handful of rotting, dying institutions run by failures.
How dare they double the ante on the loan to the automobile manufacturers, to $50 billion without DEMANDING-- yes absolutely requiring-- that they up the mileage dramatically, beyong the pathetic goals currently set within the existing cafe standards (Up to 35 MPG by 2020.) Are they idiots? If a vendor comes to me and asks me for double the size of the loan or payment, I ask what more am I getting in return?
Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, Stenny Hoyer, Charlie Rangel... do your goddamned jobs and stop this crazy, stupid, panic-stricken rescue mentality that is wrong, wrong, wrong. They say that if AIG wasn't saved that chaos would have ensued. Chaos is not always a bad thing. The alternative is lack of chaos and in biology, that's a sure sign of morbidity. Maybe it seemed easier to let AIG fail. Maybe it would have been scary for a time. But NO institution is or should be immortal. When one becomes so obviously unable to function in a healthy, successful way, it is time, like with a dying human, to let it go. Keeping it alive is the antithesis of good judgemnt and certainly, converting it to a government managed entity, is the antithesis of conservatism's most basic principles. But since the leadership of the conservative, or should I say faux/former conservative party is leading the way in the socialization of the finance and securities industry, I say, don't stop there. While you're at it, take the leap and do something FOR the American people.
Give the American people health care. Spend $100 or $200 billion on it, whatever it takes. I dare any Republican who has remained silent as the finance industry has become socialized to complain about health care being socialized. I dare any Democrat (Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank,Henry Waxman and any bluedog democrat) to NOT speak out demanding approval of the legislation. There's a bill that's pending-- HB 676 and it could be passed posthaste. Do it, damn it! Enough of this finding money for doddering, senile corporations to protect foreign investors.

Paulson plan could cost $1 trillion
Congressional leaders said after meeting Thursday evening with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that as much as $1 trillion could be needed to avoid an imminent meltdown of the U.S. financial system. Paulson announced plans Friday morning for a "bold approach" that will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. At a news conference at Treasury headquarters, he called for a "temporary asset relief program" to take bad mortgages off the books of the nation's financial institutions. Congressional leaders had left Washington on Friday, but Paulson planned to confer with them over the weekend.
"We're talking hundreds of billions," Paulson told reporters. "This needs to be big enough to make a real difference and get to the heart of the problem."

US: Pakistan boosting atom bomb ability
Pakistan is building supplementary plutonium-producing reactors to enhance its ability to produce more atomic bombs, a US report says. Pakistan is close to completing a second plutonium-producing reactor, and is well into building a third, and these reactors could increase its ability to make atomic bombs, the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) said in a report, the local media highlighted Friday. A row of cooling towers indicated the second reactor was close to completion and could be ready to operate in a year's time, according to Washington group's report. The 10-page report estimated the reactors would run on power of “about 100-megawatts or more”, which could enable the two combined to yield plutonium for 8 to 10 atomic bombs a year.

Anger as council turns off streetlights to save cash
Powys A council has been criticised after it decided to switch off most of its streetlights during the night to save money. Powys County Council will turn off 64 per cent of its lamps, which could save £225,000 a year.
The scheme means that its 14,000 working lights will be reduced to 5,000. One local pensioner, Dennis Cleaton, 75, of Llandrindod Wells, called the blackouts ridiculous.

He said: 'I've used these goggles in more than 100 different pools in countries including Germany, Spain, France and Portugal and no one else has ever complained or questioned why I am using them.

Right now, the government is preparing to "fix" the economic mess by setting up a new Resolution Trust Corporation. For those too young to remember, this is a repeat of the same scam used to "fix" the S&L Debacle (remember the Keating Five?) back in the 1980s. And in short it was simply going around with a checkbook filled with taxpayer dollars and cleaning up the mess made by reckless deal making (and a little CIA drug money laundering) in a climate of relaxed regulation.
So, here we are, 20 years later, yet another Bush in the White House and a repeat of the same fiscal debacle stares us in the face. More than coincidence? Many think so.

Fears that further financial casualties were inevitable abounded on Wall Street this morning as shares in Morgan Stanley appeared to be in freefall and the US Government reportedly asked big banks to put together a rescue buyout of Washington Mutual.Shares in US investment bank Morgan Stanley were down by 40.63 per cent this morning at $17.04 while its larger rival Goldman Sachs fell by 21.9 per cent, even after both reported better-than-expected earnings yesterday. The cost of protecting Morgan Stanley and Goldman’s debt also spiked.
The US Government has asked big banks, including HSBC, to put together a rescue buyout of Washington Mutual, the American lender, according to a report.
The banks involved include Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and HSBC but the report in the New York Post said that no deal talks were being held between the banks and WaMu.

Motorists who leave their engines idling unnecessarily face an on-the-spot fine under plans being considered by councillors.West Sussex County Council is seeking to reduce exhaust emissions by penalising drivers who refuse to turn off their engines while parked or waiting at railway crossings.
A pilot scheme expected to be introduced in January will allow traffic wardens to fine motorists who break the new rule.
A council spokesman said: “We want to get people out of the habit of leaving their cars ticking over out of convenience.”
Signs are already in place at level crossings ordering people to switch their engines off.
“We would stress that this is just an investigation at this stage,” the spokesman said. “If it was ever introduced the fixed penalty would probably be £20. But we would hope that the vast majority of motorists would be willing to cooperate.”
An Air Quality Management Area has already been set up in Shoreham, where the trial will take place. It will be expanded across the county if it proves successful.

Gates: U.S. To Send More Troops To Afghanistan
ABOARD A MILITARY AIRCRAFT - The United States intends to send many more combat forces to Afghanistan next year, regardless of whether troop levels in Iraq are cut further this year, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Friday.

Taxis Get CCTV Cameras
TAXI drivers have welcomed proposals to improve passenger and driver safety, including tougher driver testing and compulsory installation of CCTV.
Changes to the licensing of cabs operating in Gravesham were recommended for approval at a Gravesham Borough Council Cabinet meeting on Monday with a final decision expected in January next year.
If the initiative is approved, Gravesham will be the first borough in the country to introduce compulsory CCTV into its taxis.
The idea was first discussed after 71-year-old taxi driver Gian Chand Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend, was murdered by passenger Luke Aujila, of no fixed abode, in May 2007, by running him over in his own cab. He was sentenced to life in prison in May this year.
Rick Davis, 54, the current joint secretary of the United Taxi Group which represents all taxi drivers in Gravesham, said: “I think as a whole, taxi drivers in the borough will welcome the changes that could be made.
“There will obviously be some who have problems with certain aspects, but I think if it improves the safety of both the drivers and the passengers, then you have to support it.”
Other changes could include the introduction of a penalty points system for drivers breaking the rules, a revision of driver application procedures, enhanced testing which will question candidates on the knowledge of the area and specific landmarks, and drivers will also have to have knowledge of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire law.
Mr Davis had his CCTV fitted last Thursday, at a discounted cost. Currently all drivers will have the opportunity to have CCTV fitted for £97, with funding being provided by Gravesham Borough Council and an EU grant.

An Australian politician has used his first speech to parliament to call for unemployed idlers to be stung with a cattle prod to get them to work.
John Williams, a former truck driver, shearer, farmer and small business owner who only took his place in the Senate on July 1, said he had seen many people living on employment benefits who were "determined not to work".
"They are simply getting a free ride on behalf of tax payers of Australia and it is about time they received a touch on the backside with a cattle prodder to get them off their butts and actually do some work," he said.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is backing a new project, the World Wide Web Foundation, which aims to accelerate the progress of the internet and make it more easily available and accessible in developing nations.

Drivers could have their speed controlled by satellite to stop them from breaking the limit following a Government trial of new technology.
Cars fitted with the system would have their speed automatically monitored by satellites, which would also be programmed with the speed limits for different roads.

Motorists still being ripped off as oil prices fall, but petrol stays high
Frustrated motorists are failing to see the benefit of slumping oil prices as crude yesterday dropped below $100 a barrel, the AA has warned.
The AA said drivers were being short-changed by up to 6p a litre as oil giants fail to pass on the benefits of tumbling crude prices.
It said that even allowing for a six week lag between oil prices and pump prices, motorists still appeared to be being 'ripped off' and that oil companies were 'dragging their feet.

In my life I have never seen anything like this! My niece got married today. The Wedding festivities ended at midnight. On my way home on the opposite side of the #60 freeway going into Downtown L. A. I see very large trucks w/flashing lights - about 25 to 30 - lined up to form a single-file line for cars to follow to be stopped by at least 2 dozen police! This is on a 5-lane freeway, mind you!

A money manager estimated that a trillion dollars would be lost if AIG declares bankruptcy. The whole world financial system could be taken down. He said banks in the Far East were already acting like this is inevitable, and the collapse already has been set in motion.
As you can imagine, the CNBC commentators were frantic. One demanded to know how the Fed can allow this to happen. "We know they print money," he said. Another wondered if the States whose pension funds were held by AIG could organize a bailout. Not enough time, he was told.
The bottom line is that Tuesday and the rest of this week could be ugly so be prepared. The second bottom line is that this Depression like the last appears to be caused by a deliberate contraction of credit. House prices are falling because banks don't have the money to lend to house buyers. As a result, portfolios holding mortgage backed securities are tumbling, taking banks with them. Obama: Bush's Pakistan Incursions, Small Step
US Presidential hopeful Barrack Obama has termed the cross-border raids by the US forces into Pakistan as a small step in the right direction. Obama supported the raids but described them as "baby steps" by the Bush's administration. "The Bush administration has come to that point of view. That's the kind of policy we have to pursue and continue ...This is a baby step, but it's a baby step in the right direction and something that John McCain hasn't been willing to acknowledge," Susan Rice, the top foreign policy adviser to Senator Obama, said. Pakistan has reportedly fired warning shots at US-led helicopters, repelling them as they entered the country's tribal region. 21 Dead In Indonesia Stampede
At least 21 people have been killed and many others injured in a stampede in Indonesia's East Java province, local media reported. They were waiting for a charity handout, a tradition during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, when the crush happened in the town of Pasuruan. Most of the dead are women and children. According to local police officials, about 10,000 people were lined up in an alley to receive cash handouts, of $3.30 per person, from a wealthy family. Islamic Sharia Courts In Britain Are Now 'Legally Binding'
Islamic sharia law courts in Britain are exploiting a little-known legal clause to make their verdicts officially binding under UK law in cases including divorce, financial disputes and even domestic violence.
A new network of courts in five major cities is hearing cases where Muslims involved agree to be bound by traditional Sharia law, and under the 1996 Arbitration Act the court's decisions can then be enforced by the county courts or the High Court.
Officials behind the new system claim to have dealt with more than 100 cases since last summer, including six involving domestic violence which is a criminal rather than civil offence, and said they hoped to take over growing numbers of 'smaller' criminal cases in future.

12 Year Old Arrested In Ni’lin Brought Before Military Court
On Sunday 14th September, Mohammad Saleh Khawaje, aged 12 years and two months, from the village of Ni’lin will spend a fourth night in Ofer prison near Ramallah, as he awaits release on bail for the charges of stone-throwing and disturbance of public order. His co-defendant, 13 year old Abdul Ahman is not so lucky; he will be kept in jail until his indictment on Tuesday 16th September, when military prosecutors will request that the judge refuse bail, forcing the child to remain incarcerated for the period of his trial - a process that takes up to six months. The difference in their treatment, according to their lawyer, is based on the slight age difference. Anger As Car Journey Data Stored
Civil liberties campaigners have expressed alarm that millions of car journeys are to be stored on a national database for five years.
Already some 10 million journeys a day are being recorded using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), but this is set to rise to 50 million.
It will be collated at a new National ANPR Data Centre in Hendon, north London, for use by police.
While the original period for which the data was planned to be held was two years, the Home Office has confirmed that it was now being kept for five years.
The disclosure came after a freedom of information request by The Guardian.
The paper has also obtained an Acpo ANPR strategy document advising officers to "fully and strategically exploit" the data gathered.

In London, roads entering the city are narrowed and have tight serpentine curves that force drivers to slow down and be recorded by CCTV cameras. Typically, such roads have concrete or reinforced plastic medians with a sentry box where police stand guard and monitor traffic flows. Following the July 7, 2005 terrorist attacks in London, security has been stepped up, with occasional spot checks by machine-gun toting police of cars and trucks entering the security cordon.
As it now stands, LMSI would link a matrix of 3,000 public and private surveillance cameras for monitoring and tracking vehicles and pedestrians south of Canal Street, the city's financial hub. Freedom Not Fear - Worldwide Protest Against The Surveillance State
Surveillance mania is spreading. Governments and businesses register, monitor and control our behaviour ever more thoroughly. No matter what we do, who we phone and talk to, where we go, whom we are friends with, what our interests are, which groups we participate in - "big brother" government and "little brothers" in business know it more and more thoroughly. The resulting lack of privacy and confidentiality is putting at risk the freedom of confession, the freedom of speech as well as the work of doctors, helplines, lawyers and journalists.
The manifold agenda of security sector reform encompasses the convergence of police, intelligence agencies and the military, threatening to melt down the division and balance of powers. Using methods of mass surveillance, the borderless cooperation of the military, intelligence services and police authorities is leading towards the construction of "Fortresses" in Europe and on other continents, directed against refugees and different-looking people but also affecting, for example, political activists, the poor and under-priviledged, and sports fans.
People who constantly feel watched and under surveillance cannot freely and courageously stand up for their rights and for a just society. Mass surveillance is thereby threatening the fabric of a democratic and open society. Mass surveillance is also endangering the work and commitment of civil society organizations.
Surveillance, distrust and fear are gradually transforming our society into one of uncritical consumers who have "nothing to hide" and - in a vain attempt to achieve total security - are prepared to give up their freedoms. We do not want to live in such a society!
We believe the respect for our privacy to be an important part of our human dignity. A free and open society cannot exist without unconditionally private spaces and communications.
The increasing electronic registration and surveillance of the entire population does not make us any safer from crime, costs millions of Euros and puts the privacy of innocent citizens at risk. Under the reign of fear and blind actionism, targeted and sustained security measures fall by the wayside, as well as tackling peoples' actual daily problems such as unemployment and poverty.
In order to protest against security mania and excessive surveillance we will take to the streets in capital cities in many countries on 11 October 2008. We call on everybody to join our peaceful protest. Politicians are to see that we are willing to take to the streets for the protection of our liberties!

After the homeland armament of the past few years we demand an immediate hold to new homeland security laws that further restrict civil liberties.
4. Guaranteeing freedom of expression, dialogue and information on the Internet
Ban the installation of filtering infrastructure on ISP networks.
Only independent and impartial judges may request the removal of Internet content.
Create a full right to quote multimedia, today indispensable to public debate in democracies.
Protect common internet places of expression (participatory sites, forums, comments on blogs) today threatened by inadequate laws encouraging self-censorship (chilling effect)
