US Dumping Toxic Brew in Iraq

The United States will be leaving a toxic brew of hazardous waste behind when US forces withdraw from Iraq, a new report says.

On Monday, The Times of London said that companies from the United States are selling local Iraqi scrap dealers a cocktail of toxic material and ordinary waste.

The waste is being disposed of locally instead of being returned for treatment or shipped to Iraq-based factories which specialize in disposal.'

Baghdad to Enclose City With 15ft Wall

Baghdad is to resort to one of the oldest forms of defence by building a massive wall around the capital to keep out insurgents, The Times has learnt.

A series of recent suicide bombings has driven the governor of the Iraqi capital to propose the concrete barrier, which will be 15ft (4.5m) high and 70 miles (112km) long. Every man, beast and vehicle entering will be searched at one of only eight gates along the main highways.

Baghdad, roughly the same size as London and with approximately five million inhabitants, will face severe disruption as a result. Freedom of movement will be limited and workers and visitors alike will probably have to wait for at least an hour to enter. Once inside, though, it is hoped they will be much safer. Shatha al-Obeidi, an aide to Salah Abdul Razzaq, the governor, said: "We want to stop the terrorist from sneaking in. With the wall it will be much easier".'

US Soldier Ordered to Leave Children Behind

A US soldier who tried to help injured Iraqi civilians after a US apache strike says his superior ordered him not to tend to the injured children on the scene.

Ethan McCord, a US infantry soldier, was one of the six troopers who were dispatched to the scene after the apache helicopters killed a dozen people, including two Reuters staff, in Baghdad.

"When I came on the scene I saw the bodies, I could hear a child crying, so the crying was coming from the van so I immediately went up to the van and when I looked inside I saw a girl who's about three years of age, she had a belly wound, and glass in her eyes and in her hair," McCord told Press TV in an exclusive interview on Sunday.

"The team leader who was standing there told me I needed to stop worrying about these motherf$@%ing kids," said McCord, a father of two.'

Iraqi Doctors Run Out of Pharmaceuticals, Start Using Acupuncture

Iraqi doctors faced with a shortage of drugs in a capital city hit by years of conflict have successfully used acupuncture to treat mothers during caesarean section births.

Reporting on Thursday on a small study of 200 cases at a Baghdad hospital, the doctors said their results suggested the ancient Chinese technique could also be a useful addition to standard medical practice in fully equipped hospitals.'

Obama To Block Release Of Incriminating Photos

On Wednesday, Obama said he “would try to block the court-ordered release of photos showing U.S. troops abusing prisoners.” The release, which was to be the result of a Freedom of Information Act request made by the ACLU, had been reasonable in the final weeks of April, but today, Obama chose to come out against the release.

According to the Associated Press, “out of concern [that] the pictures would "further inflame anti-American opinion" and endanger U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan” Obama planned to block them.'

Former top advisor to US President George W. Bush claims his ex-boss did not deceive the American public into invading Iraq seven years ago.

"Did Bush lie us into war? Absolutely not," Karl Rove wrote in his new book, CNN reported on Saturday.

In his book, "Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight," Rove has tried to defend the eight-year administration of Bush.

In 2003, the US attacked Iraq under the pretext that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, but an official CIA report in 2005 confirmed that there were no such weapons in the country.

Rove also made the extraordinary claim that Washington would 'not' have gone to war with Iraq if the administration knew that weapons of mass destruction would not be found.'

Despite the assurances of the Bush I regime that retreating Iraqi soldiers would not be attacked, just the opposite happened. Iraqi soldiers and civilians were massacred after Saddam Hussein called for their exit of Kuwait.

More than 100,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed in five weeks, the majority during the 100-hour ground war. You may say, "This is war and people get killed." That’s true, but tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers were killed by illegal weapons in a most brutal manner that contradicted international laws that apply to war.

When then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell, was asked about the number of deaths the Iraqi military suffered, he said, "I don’t have a clue and I don’t plan to undertake any real effort to find out." This is the same man who stated several months after Desert Storm that his goal was to "make the world scared to death of the United States".'

Chilcot Inquiry: Iraq Invasion Had No 'Legal Basis in International Law'

Sir Michael, who was the most senior legal adviser at the Foreign Office at the time of the invasion, told the inquiry he disagreed with the advice of Lord Goldsmith, the former attorney general, that military intervention was lawful.

"I considered that the use of force against Iraq in March 2003 was contrary to international law," he said in a written statement.
"In my opinion, that use of force had not been authorised by the (United Nations) Security Council, and had no other basis in international law".'

An Iraqi parliamentarian warns of alleged US plans to surrender the country to extremists, urging resistance on the part of Baghdad.

The Iraqi Press Agency (IPA) quoted female Shia lawmaker Maha al-Douri as saying that the United States aims to cede the country to Baath, the outlawed party of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and Takfiris — both considered to be extremist groups.'

Despite SOFA, US Will Deploy 21,000 Troops in Northern Iraq

The United States is to deploy 21,000 US troops in and around the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq despite the security agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

According to the commander of US forces in northern Iraq, Anthony Cucolo, 21,000 US forces will be deployed in Kirkuk and Mosul early next month, the Fars News Agency reported on Saturday.

Cucolo further claimed that the deployment is aimed at preventing what he called the possible Kurd-Arab tension.

Cucolo's remarks come as a surprise as there has been no Kurd-Arab tensions since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.'

UK Troops 'Tortured and Murdered' Iraqi Grandmother

Allegations that a 62-year-old Iraqi grandmother was tortured and executed by British soldiers after her family home was raided three years ago are being investigated by the Royal Military Police.

The Army's involvement in the death and abuse of Sabiha Khudur Talib is one of the most serious charges to be made against Britain during its six-year occupation of southern Iraq.

UK government ministers are to be given previously unseen police reports from a Basra crime unit which conclude that Mrs Talib's body was dumped on a roadside in a British body bag in November 2006.

There was a bullet hole in her abdomen and her face had injuries consistent with torture, police reported.'

Tony Blair’s £1m-a-year Paymaster Seeks Giant Iraqi Oil Deal

A Middle Eastern investment fund that pays Tony Blair about £1m a year as an international adviser is in talks to develop one of Iraq’s biggest oilfields.

Mubadala, a United Arab Emirates investment firm, is in negotiations to join a consortium of western oil companies developing the Zubair oilfield in southern Iraq. More than £6 billion of investment is required for the project.

Blair has always insisted that the Iraq conflict was never linked to the country’s vast oil reserves, but he was facing criticism this weekend over his role with Mubadala. The investment firm, which receives 80% of its revenues from oil and gas, intends to build the biggest oil company in the eastern hemisphere.

Blair was accused of supporting the interests of the western oil companies with the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, but dismissed the allegations as a conspiracy theory. He proposed that oil revenues should be placed in a United Nations-administered fund for the benefit of the Iraqi people.'

A US federal judge has dismissed criminal charges against five Blackwater/Xe security guards accused of fatally shooting 14 people in Baghdad in September 2007.

On Thursday, Judge Ricardo Urbina said US government prosecutors violated the defendants' rights by using incriminating statements they had made under immunity during a State Department probe to build their case.'

How does one apologise on behalf of United Nations and the international community for not standing up for you in your hour of need?'

Iraqi Troops Mass Along Iran Border

Tensions are rising at the Eastern Maysan oil field, which straddles the border between Iran and Iraq, and Iraqi forces have massed at a “staging area” just outside the field, awaiting orders.

The situation started yesterday when Iraq’s Deputy Foreign Minister claimed 11 Iranian soldiers had “invaded” the nation and occupied one of the abandoned oil wells.

US Congress Approves $636 Billion Military Budget Bill

The US Congress has sent President Barack Obama a massive annual military spending bill, part of which is to be used to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In a rare weekend vote on Saturday, the Senate approved the $636.3 billion package, which cleared the House of Representatives 395-34 on Wednesday, by an 88-10 margin.

In addition, Obama is expected to send Congress an emergency spending measure of at least $30 billion early next year to pay for his recently announced decision to send 30,000 more US troops to Afghanistan.

The bill includes $80 million to acquire more unmanned Predator drones for the US air war in Afghanistan and Pakistan.'

Veterans Group Calls On Soldiers to Refuse Orders to Deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq

In response to President Barack Obama's announcement on December 1 to deploy 30,000 additional troops to the occupation of Afghanistan, the organization March Forward!, comprising both veterans and active-duty members of the US military, has called on all soldiers to refuse their orders to deploy.

"March Forward! calls on all service members to refuse orders to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq," reads a press release from the group from December 3. "We offer our unconditional support and solidarity. Join us in the fight to ensure that no more soldiers or civilians lose their lives in these criminal wars".'

Iraq's 'Niger Cake' Fraud Re-Enacted for Iran?

A secret document that appears to show that Iran was working on building nuclear weapons as recently as 2007 is "alarming" and "part of a body of evidence backing up deep concerns over Iran's nuclear program," a Western diplomatic source with knowledge of the papers told CNN on Monday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, has a copy of the secret papers, which were also obtained by the Times of London, the source said.

IAEA officials confirm they are investigating the document, but said they have not formally asked Iran for more information about it.

A top international nuclear expert said it seemed to point to Iranian efforts to build a bomb.

"The only realistic use of this is in a nuclear weapon," said David Albright, the president of the Institute for Science and International Security.'
