Now 5.5 MILLION Households Face Choice Between Heating And Eating As Energy Bills Soar

Soaring household energy costs have left a million more people having to choose between heating and eating, according to official figures.
The statistics, released on Thursday, show that 3.5million households were in fuel poverty in 2006 - an increase of one million on 2005.
But charities claim the number spending more than 10 per cent of their income on power bills is now much higher. They say that since 2006 it has increased by another two million to around 5.5million

Energy giants are overcharging pre-payment meter customers by 'millions' every year

Britain's 'big six' energy giants should be made to pay back millions of pounds to customers using pre-payment meters, says the Government's new consumer watchdog.
Consumer Focus says the 5.9million households with the meters have been systematically 'ripped off' for years.
Energy suppliers are collecting a staggering £700million extra a year by inflating charges to these customers.

Motorists still being ripped off as oil prices fall, but petrol stays high

Frustrated motorists are failing to see the benefit of slumping oil prices as crude yesterday dropped below $100 a barrel, the AA has warned.
The AA said drivers were being short-changed by up to 6p a litre as oil giants fail to pass on the benefits of tumbling crude prices.
It said that even allowing for a six week lag between oil prices and pump prices, motorists still appeared to be being 'ripped off' and that oil companies were 'dragging their feet.

Cost of £1bn energy relief plan 'will end up on household bills'

Gordon Brown faces a double revolt despite announcing a £1 billion package yesterday to help struggling households to cope with soaring energy prices.
The Prime Minister said that energy companies and generators had agreed to stump up £910 million to pay for all low-income and pensioner families to get free loft and cavity insulation, with six million others offered half-price deals. The measures were a “better alternative” to a windfall tax.
Families could save up to £400 a year from the help offered, ministers said. Mr Brown confirmed that the payments from the companies would be authorised by legislation to be introduced into the Commons shortly, insisting that he did not expect the cost to be passed on to the consumer.
That aspiration was immediately called into question when industry figures suggested that part of the bill always ended up with the customer.

£1million Pay Rise On The Way Or Boss Of British Gas As 16 Million Of Their Customers Face Huge Bill Rises

'The boss of British Gas's parent firm could see his pay soar by £1million this year as millions face huge bill rises.
Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of Centrica, is expected to get a seven-figure increase in his pay, bonus and shares package.
The rise will be a blow for 16million British Gas customers who face a 35 per cent rise in charges.
He is one of several executives at the firm who could see earnings rocket, including British Gas managing director Philip Bentley.
Mr Laidlaw's total package is likely to top £2.8million, more than £1million ahead of last year.
In theory, he could earn £4.8million if Centrica hits profit and performance targets.
It made a profit of almost £1billion in the first half of this year and is likely to increase this in the second six months'

Rising Energy Costs Have netted the Government £1 Billion

Rising fuel costs have provided the Government with a windfall of as much as £1 billion from a scheme designed to promote renewable energy, it has been reported.
The revelation comes as Prime Minister Gordon Brown comes under pressure from Labour backbenchers to impose a windfall tax on "excessive" profits made by the energy companies.
Ministers are due in the coming week to unveil a package of measures to help consumers deal with soaring fuel prices, but efforts to persuade the power giants voluntarily to fund a cash handout to vulnerable households this winter appear to have come to nothing.
There have been calls for the money received by the Treasury from the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation scheme to be used to help families with energy efficiency measures such as home insulation.

Union Fury Over Fuel Payment U-turn

The decision to rule out cash handouts for households struggling with soaring fuel bills has been blasted by unions as a "downright disgrace".
Ministers were expected to unveil plans to give each household up to £100 following in-depth discussions with power companies.
But Whitehall sources confirmed that the Government will instead focus on long-term proposals, including support for energy efficiency measures.
The Unite union said "greedy" fuel companies have won out over struggling consumers and people need an "immediate respite" from rising energy costs.
Left-leaning pressure group Compass said the real disappointment will be felt by the "fuel poor who will go cold this winter".
