It is a tale of two cities. One has ice-cold beers, internet access, thousands of men and billions of dollars’ worth of gleaming machinery, together with piles of food, blankets, generators and other aid relief from around the globe.
This is the heavily fortified US-controlled Port-au-Prince airport and neighbouring United Nations compound.
The other is the devastated city of Port-au-Prince, where the stench of death fills the air and starving people are in utter despair, still in need of the basic necessities of food, water, shelter and medical care.
Never, in more than 20 years of covering disasters, has the void between the might and power of the Westernised world and the penniless and pitiful people they have been mobilised to ‘save’ been so glaringly obvious to me.

The Ugly Truth About Foreign Aid in Afghanistan
Exorbitant sums of international aid to Afghanistan are being lavished by Western aid agencies on their own officials in the conflict-stricken country.
"In the United States, Britain, and other countries, people work and taxpayers pay money that goes to help Afghanistan to build roads, dams, and electricity lines," Ramazan Bashardost, an Afghan parliament member and former planning minister, said.
Bashardost added, "But when the money comes to Afghanistan, it's spent on those people who have cars costing USD 60,000 and who live in houses with a USD 15,000 monthly rent. This money goes to these expenses -- 90 percent logistics and administration."

British Police Brutality Exposed
The admission by London's police force that their officers horrifically assaulted a defenseless Muslim man was one of the blackest moments in recent British police history.
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan police agreed to pay Babar Ahmad £60,000 as well as his legal costs in compensation for the brutal beating their officers gave him.
Not only does this admission disclose the sadistic brutality and Islamophobia of some serving British police officers, it should open everyone's eyes to a cover-up and a catalogue of lies perpetrated by the highest levels of the police service. It should also serve as a warning that the British authorities' rhetoric about reaching out to Muslims is nothing but a sham.

Secret Report Reveals How MEPs Make Millions
A LEAKED internal report has revealed systematic abuses by Euro MPs of parliamentary allowances that enable them to pocket more than £1m in profits from a single five-year term, writes Jonathan Oliver.
The auditor’s confidential report, suppressed by the Brussels parliament, discloses the extraordinary frauds used by MEPs to siphon off staff allowances funded by taxpayers.
It shows that some claimed for paying assistants of whom no record exists, awarded them bonuses of up to 1½ times annual salary and diverted public money into front companies.
An investigation into the abuses of staff allowances worth up to £182,000 a year — many of which are paid by MEPs to members of their family — was delivered in January last year but was not published.

Body in Charge of UK Policing Policy is Now an £18m-a-year Brand Charging The Public £70 for a 60p Criminal Records Check
Britain's most powerful police body is being run as a private business with an annual income of around £18million.The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), which oversees everything from anti-terrorism policy to speed cameras, was last night facing demands that it be disbanded, following a Mail on Sunday investigation into its activities which include:
Selling information from the Police National Computer for up to £70 – even though it pays just 60 pence to access those details.
Marketing ‘police approval’ logos to firms selling anti-theft devices.
Operating a separate private firm offering training to speed camera operators, which is run by a senior officer who was banned from driving.
Advising the Government and police forces – earning £32million of taxpayers’ money in the process.
Employing retired senior officers on lucrative salaries.
Until now, ACPO’s central role in policing has not been questioned as it is seen as an essential, if sometimes controversial, public body writing the rules on police operations as well as campaigning on key issues such as the proposed 90-day detention for terror suspects and the DNA database.
But the organisation is not a public body, nor is it a police trade union or even a campaign group. It is a private company – a self-styled ‘global brand name’ – paid millions of pounds a year by the taxpayer to effectively run the nation’s police forces.
Because ACPO is a private company, members of the public cannot use the Freedom of Information Act to scrutinise its operations. Last night it came under fire from politicians and human rights lawyers, who called for its immediate reform.

Labou Lord Watson Has Been Claiming £308 a Day Expenses While On Early Release From Prison For Arson
Lord Watson, a former Labour MP, was jailed for 16 months in September 2005 after setting fire to curtains in a hotel during a drunken incident.However, he was released from prison early in May 2006 and has since claimed up to £308 a day in House of Lords expenses while on probation.
The disclosure will add to the growing pressure for Lords reform to stop convicted criminals and those found to have broken Parliamentary rules from continuing to sit as peers.
Since leaving prison, Lord Watson has claimed a total of about £100,000 in expenses despite voting on only about a quarter of the days he was attending. He has spoken only five times in the past year and has not put down a single written question.
The peer is also a director of a Scottish-based public-affairs company offering "parliamentary monitoring" services. His profile on the firm's website boasts he is a "regular attender at the House of Lords".

Lord Moonie - Corrupt There were calls for the law to be changed to allow unelected peers to be removed from the House of Lords if they are found guilty of breaking anti-corruption rules.
The four peers, including two former ministers, face a Parliamentary inquiry into allegations that they pledged to amend laws in return for payments from lobbyists. They were secretly recorded in an undercover newspaper sting apparently pledging to seek changes to proposed laws as paid consultants for a foreign businessman.
Senior MPs said that the actions of the peers would amount to "corruption" if proven and Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesman, called for the police to investigate the claims.
The public standards watchdog described the allegations as "serious" and threatened to intervene if necessary.
However, despite a recent review of the system of investigating complaints against peers, the most severe punishment that can be served is to demand a public apology.
Even if a Lord is prosecuted and jailed they are still free to return to the House upon release.
One of the Lords implicated in the lobbying scandal boasted to an undercover reporter that there was nothing that the Parliamentary authorities could do "but jump up and down".
And you can bet your bottom dollar that Cameron's and Clegg's Mob will be no better. They Just haven't been caught yet!

Big Pharma Sitting On Cheaper Drugs
Neelie Kroes, the European Commissioner for Competition, concluded her 10-month investigation into the pharmaceutical industry by concluding it "does not work as well as it should" and had cost 17 member states €3bn (£2.5bn) between 2000 and 2007 by limiting the availability of cheaper generic drugs.
Ms Kroes – whose inquiry began in January with raids at some of Europe's largest drugs companies, including GlaxoSmithKline in the UK – warned that the EC may now launch anti-trust proceedings against individual companies.
