'Greece Being Forced to Buy Arms'

A leading European parliamentarian has accused France and Germany of forcing Greece to buy billions of euros in arms in exchange for their bailout money.

France and Germany, while publicly urging Greece to make harsh public spending cuts, bullied its government to confirm billions of euros in arms deals, Franco-German lawmaker Daniel Cohn-Bendit alleged on Friday.

The accusation drew a stern denial from the French government.

Cohn-Bendit said he had met last week in Athens with Papandreou, a long-time friend of his, and accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy of blackmailing the Greek leader.'

French Workers Threaten to Blow Up Factory Facing Closure

Workers at a factory facing closure in France have threatened to blow up the plant unless they are given better layoff compensation.

About 50 workers at Sodimatex, which makes car rugs, have been occupying the site in Crepy-en-Valois since Thursday. They are pressuring the company for better compensation.

The employees have placed petrol bombs near a large gas tank and are threatening to set them ablaze.'

French Justice Minister Threatens Israel Critics With Jail

Pro-Palestinian solidarity groups in France have been threatened by the French justice minister with legal action, after they stepped up a campaign of boycotts against Israeli goods.

On March 30, Palestinian Land Day, French activists held large rallies across the country and joined the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Campaign against Israel.

Thousands of people held a protest in Paris in solidarity with Palestinians and urged the imposition of sanctions on Israeli products.'

France Panic In Web Blunder Over 'Disaster'

People logging on to the website of the SNCF, the French state railway, got a shock this morning. It announced that an explosion had torn through a high-speed express in Burgundy, killing more than 100 people and injuring nearly 400.

For more than 40 minutes, panicked members of the public called the disaster helpline that accompanied the announcement and word of the catastrophe flashed around Twitter and other social networks. Then the SNCF realised that an internal disaster exercise had reached the public site.

Embarrassed managers were at a loss to explain how the drill in public information had gone live. "We often carry out crisis exercises and send information messages to the public and press communiqués," a spokeswoman said. "There was an error today which meant that the message ended up on sncf.com".'

France Falls Under Internet Censorship

The French parliament has buckled under pressure and approved the Sarkozy government's authoritarian plans to censor the Internet.

The government opposed all objections to its plans to filter Internet sites, which have been controversial throughout French society. Today La Quadrature du Net, a French openness group, said that the action would give the government total control over its citizens' access to the Internet. It added that Nicholas Sarkozy was using excuses to clear a path for his rules, whch ultimately would come at the expense of liberty.'

Anti-Piracy Agency's Logo Broke Copyright

The French government's web police force – called Hadopi – was set up to stop piracy and clamp down on illegal downloaders.

The agency's logo was unveiled this by French culture minister Frederic Mitterrand, who said that Hadopi "finally had a face".

But within hours of its launch, it was forced to apologise for using a typeface without permission that belonged to France Telecom.'

The levy on advertising revenue is the latest plank in France's drive to regulate the internet, which has seen it enact some of the world's toughest antipiracy legislation.

French President Announces Creation of Paramilitary Groups

French President Nicolas Sarokozy has announced plans to form paramilitary groups to patrol parts of cities, the "banlieu", where large numbers of immigrants live, in a move that has disturbing echoes of Fascist Europe in the 1930s.

Private "citizen" paramilitary groups are supposed to keep „law and order“ in the banlieue. But the decision to set them up ahead of the up ahead of up-coming regional elections will spark fears that will be employed to intimidate political opponents.

French Army to be Used in Swine Flu Vaccination Centres

The French army’s medical corps is to help carry out vaccinations in the country’s 1080 vaccine centers, according to an announcement by the French Ministry of Interior today, Saturday.

The army is being called in along with doctors and other health care personnel to operate the controversial centers and administer the untested swine flu jab in spite of -- or because of?-- evidence of a low voluntary up take of the jab among the population.

According to French government figures only about 300,000 people have taken the jab so far in spite of extreme pressure from the health ministry and daily media hype about the alleged dangers of the swine flu.'

France: Police Custody ‘Against the Law’

Police in France are denying suspects the right to legal representation when taken in for questioning, the head of Paris’s legal profession has claimed.

The bâtonnier de Paris Christian Charrière-Boumazel – the president of the Paris bar who represents 21,000 lawyers – said French custody conditions were illegal according to the EU.

He said the European Court of Human Rights had ruled in November 2008 and again last month that a suspect has a right to have a lawyer present from the moment they enter custody to organise their defence and prepare for questioning.'

French Woman Gets Crippling Illness After H1N1 Vaccine

A young woman in France has been diagnosed with the crippling illness Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) after a swine flu shot, following reports yesterday about a Virginia teen who was similarly struck down by the disease hours after receiving the H1N1 vaccine.

The woman, identified only as a health worker, was diagnosed with GBS six days after she received the swine flu shot, according to the French health ministry.'

Israel to Coordinate With U.S., U.K. and France to Ensure Goldstone Veto

The General Assembly "requests the secretary general to transmit the report of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza conflict to the Security Council," the resolution said.

The new resolution urged Israel and Palestine to launch investigations that "are independent, credible and in conformity with international standards" within three months.
