The Puppet Tries to Cut His Strings

Watching Washington’s growing anger Afghan president Hamid Karzai, one recalls the unhappy endings of such former US allies as South Vietnam’s Diem, Iran’s Shah, Indonesia’s Suharto, Nicaragua’s Somoza, and Pakistan’s Zia ul-Haq.

Washington has been loudly hinting it would like to oust Karzai, but so far it has not managed to identify a suitable replacement who commands any respect or tribal support from Afghans.

The Obama administration flirted with trying to replace Karzai by the North Alliance chief, Abdullah Abdullah, but he had too many Communist and drug-dealer skeletons in his closet.

The Obama administration is blaming the largely powerless Karzai, a former CIA `asset,’ for America’s failure to defeat Taliban.

Washington accused its man Karzai of rigging last year’s elections. That’s true. But the US pre-rigged the Afghan elections by excluding all parties opposed to Western occupation. The US is doing the same thing on Iraq’s elections.'

No Joke: Karzai Threatens to Join the Taliban

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has slammed Western backers for the second time in a week, accusing the United States of interference, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

In a private meeting with up to 70 Afghan lawmakers Saturday, Karzai also warned that the Taliban insurgency could become a legitimate resistance movement if foreign meddling in Afghan affairs continues, the Journal said, citing participants in the talks.

During the talks, Karzai, whose government is supported by billions of dollars of Western aid and 126,000 foreign troops fighting the Taliban, said he would be compelled to join the insurgency himself if the parliament does not back his bid to take over Afghanistan's electoral watchdog.'

Karzai Steps Up Attack Against US War Policy

Afghan President Hamid karzai says there will be no military operation in the southern province of Kandahar unless the Afghan people support it.

In a meeting with local officials in Kandahar, Karzai promised to consult tribal leaders before any US-led military offensive in the region.

He said any such move would depend on the Afghan people's full agreement and permission.'

US Bid to Bypass Karzai's Afghan Government Upsets Allies

The US is seeking to extend its control over the day-to-day running of Afghanistan with the appointment of an international "high representative" in Kabul in an attempt to bypass Hamid Karzai's much-criticised government.

The initiative, being pushed by the US special envoy, Richard Holbrooke, has caused a split between Washington and its closest Nato allies, who believe it could further undermine the Afghan president's legitimacy and the United Nations' role in the country.'

NATO Sends Threatening Signals to Karzai

NATO suggests that the 'credibility' of the re-instated Afghan administration depends on Kabul submission to the alliance's military pursuits in the war-ravaged country.

NATO's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance would seek to refresh its understanding with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, AFP reported on Friday.

Under the bilateral agreement, the US-dominated body keeps, and intends to increase, its more than 100,000-strong force in the war-torn country.'

Afghanistan: Hamid Karzai Declared President

The chief electoral officer confirmed that a second vote would not take place, a day after Mr Karzai's main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, said he would not take part.

Earlier, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon said the UN would respect and support any decision by the Afghan Independent Election Commission on whether to organise a second presidential ballot.

"The United Nations and the international community will stand together and walk together with the next government and the people of Afghanistan," he said.

Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister, pulled out of the contest on Sunday, citing fears of a repeat of the fraud which marred August's first round.'

US Seeks 'to Bypass Afghan President'

The US and European allies plan to create a new chief executive role in Afghanistan to bypass President Hamid Karzai, a report says.

The Guardian reported on Monday that the creating of the role, possibly a prime ministerial role, will be followed by planting a high-profile figure in the heart of the Kabul government.

"There needs to be a deconcentration of power," said one senior European official in defending the US initiative for an alternative chief executive in Afghanistan. "

We need someone next to Karzai, a sort of chief executive, who can get things done, who will be reliable for us and accountable to the Afghan people."
