Petition Record Over Home Schooling

Dozens of MPs lined up in the Commons to deliver petitions from constituents urging the Government not to go ahead with proposals to shake up home education.

Tory Graham Stuart said people from more than 120 constituencies officially opposed the compulsory registration of home educating families in England. The previous record of petitions presented in one day was 44 in 2006, he said.

In June, the Government accepted the findings of a review by Graham Badman which said home educating families should register annually.

The mandatory registration scheme will be administered by councils who will visit parents at home.

Mr Stuart (Beverley and Holderness) told MPs: "If enacted, the Government's proposals will for the first time in our history tear away from parents and give to the state the responsibility for a child's education.'

Home-Schooling Parents May Face Criminal Record Checks

Parents who teach their own children at home must undergo criminal records checks, say Government education inspectors.
The estimated 40,000 parents who choose not to send their children to school should be vetted, says Ofsted.
It said that parents whose records throw up suspicions should be barred from teaching their own children.

Government Plans to Regulate Home-Schooling Must be Rebuffed

Today, the consultation period ends on government plans to impose new restrictions on the thousands of parents who educate their children at home. It is a consultation in name only, because the Government has already decided what it wants to do. Ed Balls, the Children's Secretary, has accepted the recommendations of a review carried out by a former council chief called Graham Badman.

He concluded that since parents are clearly not to be trusted with the education of their children, they will have to register with the local authority, be subjected to inspection visits by Ofsted and submit a statement of how they intend to educate their child.

Let us remember that many of these parents have taken their children out of school to escape the damaging impact of precisely this sort of bureaucratic meddling, which has destroyed their faith in the ability of the state system to deliver a high-quality education.

UK Government Tries to Demonise Home Schooling

Children educated at home are twice as likely to be known by social services and four times more likely as young adults to be out of work, education or training than those who go to school, MPs have been told.

MPs on the cross-party select committee for children, schools and families asked the head of a government inquiry into home education and the schools minister to defend calls for tougher rules on parents who teach their children at home.

Parents Protest at Ofsted Inspections for Children Taught at Home

Thousands of parents are prepared to go to court over plans to limit home schooling, The Times has learnt.

Parents whose children are educated at home do not have to register with their local authority and are not inspected. But proposals being considered by the Government would change this and threaten parents’ ability to choose the curriculum for their children, campaigners say.

“We have a lot of problems with inspectors because they know schools and that model of education isn’t very useful when you are teaching a small number of children,” said Leslie Barson, who is organising a demonstration this week against the plans.

The home-educated child dictated what they learnt, she added. “It doesn’t matter what they learn about, as long as they think it’s a fantastic world out there. The beauty of home education is its flexibility. This would be outlawed by the local authority.”

Home Education Stamped Upon by Illuminati

Balls and his Government cronies commissioned a report into Home Education under the guise of investigating whether or not the children who are taught at home could be under greater risk of abuse. What a joke that idea would be if the world weren’t treated so seriously. But it is, and so the report was produced and the government has accepted every bit of it.

Of course they have! They already knew what the outcome would be before the investigations took place. What would be the point of commissioning a report otherwise? This is government we are talking about here and its raison d’etre is the enslavement of its people.

If you are going to enslave your people you sure as hell don’t want them being educated. If they are educated they can see how to break free of the chains.

Home School: A Quiet Revolution

Friends at college don’t always know what to think when they ask Chris Byrd where he went to high school.

“Really? You were home-schooled? Why aren’t you a freak?”

In Oklahoma, by some estimates, 33,000 children are facing that kind of question. If home schools were a district of their own, it would be twice the size of Broken Arrow Public Schools, and three times the size of Jenks.

The Coming War Against Home Schoolers

I knew this was coming. The inflamed, all-seeing red eye of political correctness, glaring this way and that from its dark tower, has finally discovered that home schooling is a threat to the Marxoid project, and has launched its first open attack on it.

Before long, those who wish to declare independence from the state system (and cannot afford monstrous private school fees) will face endless interference, monitoring and regulation. How do we know this?

On the 19th January, an obscure person called Delyth Morgan levelled what I regard as an astonishing smear against people who educate their children at home. She suggested that such parents might be abusers, saying (I have taken these words directly from the Education department's own website):

'Making sure children are safe, well and receive a good education is our most serious responsibility.'Parents are able, quite rightly, to choose whether they want to educate children at home, and a very small number do. I’m sure the vast majority do a good job. However, there are concerns that some children are not receiving the education they need.'And in some extreme cases, home education could be used as a cover for abuse. We cannot allow this to happen and are committed to doing all we can to help ensure children are safe, wherever they are educated.'

This review will look at whether the right systems are in place that allow local authorities and other agencies to ensure that any concerns about the safety, welfare or education of home educated children are addressed quickly and effectively. The review will of course talk to home educating families to ensure their views and experiences are heard.'

Home-Schooling Growing in Popularity

The number of U.S. children being home-schooled has steadily increased during recent years and shows no sign of declining, a statistician says.
There was a 74 percent increase in the number of home-school children between 1999 and 2007.
Gail Mulligan of the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics said a variety of reasons led to 1.5 million children being primarily educated in U.S. homes in 2007, USA Today said Monday.
Among the home-schooling reasons given by parents in a 2007 survey were moral and religious factors, along with concerns about family time and finances.

Homeschooling Banned in California as State Turns Parents Into Criminals for Teaching Their Own Children

A California appeals court has ruled that homeschooling of children is illegal unless their parents have teaching credentials from the state.

"California is now on the path to being the only state to deny the vast majority of homeschooling parents their fundamental right to teach their own children at home," said Michael Smith, president of the Home School Legal Defense Association.

The court overturned a lower court's finding that homeschooling did not constitute a violation of child welfare laws.

"California courts have held that ... parents do not have a constitutional right to homeschool their children," Justice H. Walter Croskey said.

Down Wiv School: Children Are Best Educated At Home

'It is back-to-school this week. All over the country, stressed parents made last-minute dashes to the shops to force children to try on clumpy school shoes. Then they got up early, hurried their children into cars or on to buses, got stuck in jams, arrived later than intended and said a rushed goodbye. Then they found that the children had gone. Relief may have been mixed with melancholy, loss and a hope that the children were all right behind those high windows, told what to do by strangers.
The return to school is a well-established part of the journey of life. It seems normal, right and inevitable. But actually it is none of these things. Yes, it is normal in the early 21st century. But if modern civilisation started about 10,000 years ago, this way of treating children has been “normal” only for the last 2 per cent of the time. It is a new, artificial construct designed to provide education at low cost. It certainly was not created to provide a pleasant or socialising experience for children.
Schools are not clearly “right”, either. People tend to think that what everyone does and what they themselves experienced must be right. But there is nothing obviously ideal about delivering your children to other people who do not love them as you do, and who are likely to teach them things with which you may disagree. And sending children to school is not inevitable. Under the law, children must be educated. But they do not have to be educated at a school. There is another way. '
