Czech President Klaus Still Holding Out Over Lisbon Treaty

Václav Klaus, the Czech President, who is the last hurdle to full ratification of the Lisbon treaty, has made a final attempt to derail the agreement.

In a submission to the Czech constitutional court, which will decide tomorrow whether the treaty is compatible with the country’s constitution, Mr Klaus has suggested that it should be subject to a referendum.'

Czech Republic 'Planning to Delay Signing Lisbon Treaty'

EU leaders are said to be furious that the Czech Republic is planning to delay signing the Lisbon treaty for up to six months even if the Irish vote "yes" in their referendum next month.

The country might even try to delay it until after the British general election campaign when a Tory victory would see the question put to voters by David Cameron.

US to Abandon Polish-Czech Missile Shield, Lobbyist Says

The United States has all-but abandoned plans to house anti-missile bases in Poland and the Czech republic, according to a senior White House lobbyist.

Riki Ellison, the chairman of the 10,000 member-strong Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, said in Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza on Thursday (26 August) that the US has changed its mind to avoid a rift with Russia and is now looking at Israel, Turkey, the Balkans or ship-borne facilities instead.

Czech President Refers Lisbon Treaty to Court

Supported by 17 Czech senators, Mr Klaus, a critic of the treaty, plans to refer the document to his country's constitutional court at the start of August.

In seeking a ruling on whether the treaty complies with the Czech constitution, Mr Klaus would be able to delay signing the treaty into Czech law until the court had given its verdict.

Seventy Years on, Can the Czechs Save OUR Freedom?

The very thought of Tony Blair as 'President of Europe' may appall many of us.

But across the Channel various heads of government think he might fit if such a post comes to be created by the Lisbon Treaty, alongside its transfer of more chunks of sovereignty to Brussels.

Whether that process is completed is more algebra than arithmetic. And one of the unknowns is the flexibility of David Cameron's vertebrae.

Britain is already signed up to the Treaty by Gordon Brown. But two barriers remain to this proposed leap forward towards a European single state: Ireland and the Czech Republic.

The Irish will have their second referendum in October, following concessions from the EU. The combined might of the Dublin and Brussels propaganda machine may well secure a Yes.

That would leave President Vaclav Klaus as our only saviour. Here we have what must surely rank as one of the greatest of historical ironies.

European Union's Lisbon Treaty Fuels Flames of Dissent Across Continent

The Lisbon Treaty is expected to take a key step towards becoming law across the European Union this week when Germany's highest court rules that it is broadly compatible with the country's constitution.

The much-anticipated judgment will mean that only three out of the EU's 27 member states will still have to complete formal ratification of the treaty - Poland, the Czech Republic and Ireland.

Klaus Vetoes Czech Approval of Lisbon Treaty

The Czech President Vaclav Klaus said he would not ratify the Lisbon Treaty after it was approved by the senate yesterday, raising a new obstacle to plans to reform the EU.

Mr Klaus explained that he would not sign the treaty because of its rejection by Irish voters last year and an expected court challenge in the Czech Republic.

"The Lisbon Treaty is dead for this moment," said President Klaus. "It is dead because it was rejected in a referendum in one member state. Therefore, a decision on ratification of this treaty is not on the agenda at this point."

Ireland plans to hold a new vote later this year on the EU's charter for reform. Yesterday the Czech senate voted 54-20 to ratify the treaty which is meant to simplify decision-making in a union that has grown from 15 to 27 members over the past five years. Mr Klaus and lawmakers among the ruling right-wing Civic Democrats claim that the treaty takes away sovereignty and is a step towards a European superstate.

Ireland Stands Alone Against The EU Lisbon Treaty

Ireland now stands alone after the Czechs completed parliamentary ratification of the Lisbon Treaty this afternoon.

Czech senators removed the last substantialbarrier to the Lisbon Treaty, outside Ireland, by voting 54-20, with seven abstentions, to ratify the text derived from the old EU Constitution.

Jose Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President, was suitably jubilant.

Nicolas Sarkozy Attacks Czech Refusal to Fly EU Flag

The French president sided with federalist Euro-MPs who are engaged in a bitter feud with Vaclav Klaus, the Czech president and a Eurosceptic.


Senior MEPs, including the president of the European Parliament, Hans Gert Poettering, caused a diplomatic incident ten days ago after demanding that Mr Klaus hoist the European flag over his residence during bad tempered talks in Prague.


"It was a wound, it was an outrage to see that flags had been taken down from public buildings," said President Sarkozy, the current holder of the EU's six-month rotating presidency which he hands over to the Czech Republic in January.

"Mr Poettering can count on the full support of the French president."

Karel Schwarzenberg, the Czech foreign minister, hit back as the diplomatic war of words
between Paris and Prague threatened to overshadow the smooth transfer of the EU presidency.

"There is no law binding the Czech Republic to hang the EU flag over Prague Castle. Prague Castle is a symbol of the Czech state and not the EU," he said.

"It is not up to the head of another state to criticise the Czech president over flags."
