Schoolchildren 'Routinely Monitored' by CCTV

Surveillance cameras are now installed in most UK schools, despite little warning given to parents or pupils, it was claimed.

As many as 85 per cent of teachers have reported the use of CCTV in their schools and one-in-10 said cameras had even been placed in toilets.

According to the study, some schools are also using other techniques such as fingerprinting, metal detectors, electronic identity cards, eye scanners and facial recognition systems.

Research funded by Salford University said that schools were increasingly becoming a “hotbed for surveillance practices” in the UK as children were subjected to checks for often mundane reasons such as borrowing a book from a library or paying for lunch.'

Perversion Is Fine, So Long As You're In A Position Of Authority

Yet another story about a school installing surveillance cameras in bathrooms reminds us that, while parents are treated as pedophiles for taking photographs of their own children, any perversion whatsoever is acceptable as long as it is conducted by those deemed to be in a position of authority.

"Outraged parents have hit out at a school in Birmingham after pupils discovered CCTV cameras in the school's toilets," reports Sky News.

"Youngsters at Grace Academy in Chelmsley Wood claim they returned from half-term to find staff had installed the cameras without notifying them or their parents."

The report points to another recent case in Britain, where a school in Salford filmed children in various stages of undress changing into their gym kit.

Parents slammed the move as a "total invasion of privacy" and many students refused to use the bathroom, but the school claimed that installing cameras to watch children in the most intimate setting possible was perfectly normal because "children want to feel secure".

So as long as it's done in the name of safety and security, watching children in bathrooms is acceptable. Perhaps child molesters who are caught with kiddie porn should use the defense that they are merely watching videos of children to make them "feel secure". But we're forgetting the golden rule - you're only allowed to engage in such behavior if you happen to be ascribed some position of authority.'

Secret CCTV Cameras Fitted INSIDE People's Homes to Spy on Neighbours Outside

Town halls are installing cameras inside suburban homes to spy on the neighbourhood.
The Big Brother tactic - which is allowed under the anti-terrorist Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act - is being used by Croydon council in South London to catch those suspected of 'anti-social behaviour'.
The CCTV cameras are placed inside the house of a willing resident, but trained on the street.
If deemed successful, the £1,000 cameras could be installed across the country to catch low-level offenders.'

UK Government To Install Surveillance Cameras In Private Homes

The UK government is about to spend $700 million dollars installing surveillance cameras inside the private homes of citizens to ensure that children go to bed on time, attend school and eat proper meals.

No you aren’t reading a passage from George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, this is Britain in 2009, a country which already has more surveillance cameras watching its population than the whole of Europe put together.

Now the government is embarking on a scheme called “Family Intervention Projects” which will literally create a nanny state on steroids, with social services goons and private security guards given the authority to make regular “home checks” to ensure parents are raising their children correctly.

Telescreens will also be installed so government spies can keep an eye on whether parents are mistreating kids and whether the kids are fulfilling their obligations under a pre-signed contract.

Around 2,000 families have been targeted by this program so far and the government wants to snare 20,000 more within the next two years. The tab will be picked up by the taxpayer, with the “interventions” being funded through local council authorities.

Another key aspect of the program will see parents deemed “responsible” by the government handed the power to denounce and report bad parents who allow their children to engage in bad behavior. Such families will then be targeted for “interventions”.

Both parents and children will also be forced to sign a “behavior contract” with the government known as Home School Agreements before the start of every year, in which the state will dictate obligations that it expects to be met.

The opposition Conservative Party, who are clear favorites to win the next British election, commented that the program does not go far enough and is “too little, too late.”

NYPD Moves to Cloak Midtown With Camera License Plate Readers, and Radiation and Bio Scanners

The NYPD wants to cloak midtown with the same security blanket it rolled out for lower Manhattan: camera license plate readers, and radiation and bio scanners.

Those measures covering Manhattan south of Canal St. will slowly be applied to midtown, from 34th to 59th Sts., river to river, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the City Council Public Safety Committee.

"We want to take that model, protecting the 1.7 square miles south of Canal and replicate it in midtown Manhattan," Kelly said after the hearing Tuesday.

False Flag Alert: Ahead of G20 Summit, Council Told to Switch Off Illegal CCTV Network

The security operation at this week's G20 summit was thrown into chaos last night when it emerged that the entire network of central London's wireless CCTV cameras will have to be turned off because of a legal ruling.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has ruled that Westminster council's mobile road cameras - a third of the authority's CCTV network - "do not fully meet the resolution standards required" and must be switched off by midnight tomorrow.

The blackout begins on the eve of the summit, when world leaders arrive in the capital and protesters take to the streets.

Buying Some Wine? Spy Cameras Will be Watching

Big Brother CCTV cameras are to be fitted inside shops and supermarkets on the orders of the state to keep track on anybody buying alcohol.

A law is being quietly pushed through Parliament giving councils the power to order licensed premises to fit the surveillance cameras. Pubs will also be covered.

The footage of people innocently buying a bottle of wine in a shop or a pint of beer in a bar must be stored for at least 60 days, and be handed over to the police on demand.

CCTV Used to 'Spy' on Pupils in Schools

The surveillance equipment is in use in around 85 primary and secondary schools and colleges across the country.

Classwatch, the company behind the system, says it is being used as a way to monitor children who are disrupting lessons.

The firm said the equipment, which is sold with evidence bags approved by the Crown Prosecution Service to store material for court cases, can be used to compile "proof" of wrongdoing.

The system includes ceiling-mounted microphones and cameras and a hard drive recorder housed in a secure cabinet.

They cost around £3,000 to install in each classroom or can be leased for about £50 a month for each classroom.

Data protection watchdog the Information Commissioner has warned the surveillance may be illegal and demanded to know why schools are using it.

Ohio Prof Develops CCTV People-tracker 'ware

Boffins in Ohio have taken another step towards the global surveillance panopticon of the future, developing software which can autonomously track an individual through a city using CCTV cameras.

For now, such camera networks are small and localised. However, the Home Office here in the UK has said it would like to "create an effective cross country strategic CCTV network". Such a network, combined with Davis and Sankaranarayanan's new software, would allow plods or spooks to track people completely hands-off. That said, until facial-recognition software gets a lot better the computers would lose their target as soon as he or she left CCTV coverage.

'Sci-Fi Film' CCTV Predicts Crime

The CCTV system has gone up in sites across Portsmouth and it will reportedly help predict crimes before they actually happen.
The city's council has set up the network of "intelligent" cameras that can alert an operator to suspicious behaviour.
The system is able to spot "unusual" incidents like somebody loitering or a vehicle travelling too fast.

Paris To Quadruple Number Of CCTV Cameras

While the Paris metro and rail networks already operate around 9,500 CCTV devices, police have only 330 at their disposal to survey outside public areas. The new plan, dubbed "A Thousand Cameras for Paris", will raise that number to more than 1,200 – with most installed in high-risk areas and outside railway and underground stations.
The figure is still small compared with London, where each citizen is caught on average several hundred times a day. Britain has about four million closed-circuit security cameras compared with France's 340,000.
The CCTV drive follows Mr Sarkozy's pledge last autumn to follow London's surveillance lead. "I am very impressed by the efficiency of the British police thanks to this network of cameras," the French president said. "In my mind, there is no contradiction between respecting individual freedoms and the installation of cameras to protect everyone's security."

Lollipop Ladies To Get Covert CCTV Surveillance Capability

LOLLIPOP ladies across the country are to be equipped with cameras hidden in their poles after a spate of incidents in which drivers speed past them or beat them up.
The cameras, activated when the pole touches the ground, are pointed at offending cars. The drivers can then be found and punished.
Successful trials have been carried out by at least 10 local authorities ranging from Hillingdon, west London to Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and Dudley, West Midlands.
David Sparks, transport spokesman for the Local Government Association (LGA), said he expected all councils would buy the poles, which cost about £900 each.

“They are fantastic. They are very effective in stopping motorists and they are also highlighting the problems of renegade drivers who are no longer going to get away with it,” said Sparks.
“Lollipops” have the legal force of a red traffic light and drivers disobeying them face a £1,000 fine or three points on their licence. The LGA estimates that there are 1,400 “lollipop rage” incidents each year, which range from not stopping to assaults.

Taxis Get CCTV Cameras

TAXI drivers have welcomed proposals to improve passenger and driver safety, including tougher driver testing and compulsory installation of CCTV.
Changes to the licensing of cabs operating in Gravesham were recommended for approval at a Gravesham Borough Council Cabinet meeting on Monday with a final decision expected in January next year.
If the initiative is approved, Gravesham will be the first borough in the country to introduce compulsory CCTV into its taxis.
The idea was first discussed after 71-year-old taxi driver Gian Chand Bajar, of Darnley Road, Gravesend, was murdered by passenger Luke Aujila, of no fixed abode, in May 2007, by running him over in his own cab. He was sentenced to life in prison in May this year.
Rick Davis, 54, the current joint secretary of the United Taxi Group which represents all taxi drivers in Gravesham, said: “I think as a whole, taxi drivers in the borough will welcome the changes that could be made.
“There will obviously be some who have problems with certain aspects, but I think if it improves the safety of both the drivers and the passengers, then you have to support it.”
Other changes could include the introduction of a penalty points system for drivers breaking the rules, a revision of driver application procedures, enhanced testing which will question candidates on the knowledge of the area and specific landmarks, and drivers will also have to have knowledge of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire law.
Mr Davis had his CCTV fitted last Thursday, at a discounted cost. Currently all drivers will have the opportunity to have CCTV fitted for £97, with funding being provided by Gravesham Borough Council and an EU grant.

Big Brother In The "Big Apple": Encircling Manhattan With Thousands Of Surveillance Cameras

The Lower Manhattan Security Initiative (LMSI) and a related program, Operation Sentinel, are modeled after London's so-called "Ring of Steel." In London, roads entering the city are narrowed and have tight serpentine curves that force drivers to slow down and be recorded by CCTV cameras. Typically, such roads have concrete or reinforced plastic medians with a sentry box where police stand guard and monitor traffic flows. Following the July 7, 2005 terrorist attacks in London, security has been stepped up, with occasional spot checks by machine-gun toting police of cars and trucks entering the security cordon.
As it now stands, LMSI would link a matrix of 3,000 public and private surveillance cameras for monitoring and tracking vehicles and pedestrians south of Canal Street, the city's financial hub. Other features of the system include mobile roadblocks that could swivel into place and block off any given street to traffic.
