Obama Warns of 'Catastrophe:' What Happened to 'Hope' and 'Change?'

Barack Obama's cap on executive pay for bailout recipients yesterday overshadowed his comments about the stimulus bill, which deserve greater scrutiny.

"A failure to act, and act now [on the bill], will turn crisis into a catastrophe," Obama said, sounding a lot more like his predecessor than the candidate of hope and change.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss?

US Banks Sought Foreign Worlers Even As they Laid Off Thousands

Major U.S. banks sought government permission to bring thousands of foreign workers into the country for high-paying jobs even as the system was melting down last year and Americans were getting laid off, according to an Associated Press review of visa applications.

The dozen banks now receiving the biggest rescue packages, totaling more than $150 billion, requested visas for more than 21,800 foreign workers over the past six years for positions that included senior vice presidents, corporate lawyers, junior investment analysts and human resources specialists. The average annual salary for those jobs was $90,721, nearly twice the median income for all American households.

Something Is Happening Of Historic Proportions

I am a student of history. Professionally. I have written 15 books in six languages, and have studied it all my life. I think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is just a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten - fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

More Than A Million Homeowners Use The Credit Card To Pay Off The Mortgage And The Gas Bills

More than one million homeowners have resorted to taking out cash on their credit cards to pay their mortgage and essential bills, research suggests today.
A report accuses the banks of 'cashing in' on their customers who are 'desperate to get their hands on cash whatever the price'.
Withdrawing cash on a credit card is incredibly expensive, and involves a much higher interest rate than using a credit card to go shopping.
Typically, you are charged two per cent of the cash amount taken out, or a minimum of £5, and interest starts clocking up immediately.
On average, the APR (annual percentage rate) is a crippling 30 per cent. It has shot up in recent years from just 21.2 per cent in 2005.
The report, from the price comparison website Uswitch.com, found soaring numbers of borrowers are relying on getting out cash in this 'emergency' method.

Fatcat Barclays Bankers Jet Off To Italy For Lavish £500,000 Banquet As Country Faces Up To Financial Crisis

While the rest of the country struggles to come to terms with the financial crisis, a group of Barclays bankers have jetted off for a lavish banquet costing more than £500,000.
As British taxpayers faced up to a grim financial future, coupled with the fear of tax hikes following the government's bailout £500billion bailout package, a group of fatcat bosses from Barclays Wealth flew out to the luxurious Villa Erba, beside Lake Como in Italy yesterday for the all-expenses paid jaunt.
Invites alone for the bash are believed to have cost up to £3,000.
Over 300 guests will be wined, dined and entertained with an evening of opera before spending the night in the luxury surroundings of the exclusive Villa D'Este hotel.

Money and the Crisis of Civilization

Suppose you give me a million dollars with the instructions, "Invest this profitably, and I'll pay you well." I'm a sharp dresser -- why not? So I go out onto the street and hand out stacks of bills to random passers-by. Ten thousand dollars each. In return, each scribbles out an IOU for $20,000, payable in five years. I come back to you and say, "Look at these IOUs! I have generated a 20% annual return on your investment." You are very pleased, and pay me an enormous commission.
Now I've got a big stack of IOUs, so I use these "assets" as collateral to borrow even more money, which I lend out to even more people, or sell them to others like myself who do the same. I also buy insurance to cover me in case the borrowers default -- and I pay for it with those self-same IOUs! Round and round it goes, each new loan becoming somebody's asset on which to borrow yet more money. We all rake in huge commissions and bonuses, as the total face value of all the assets we've created from that initial million dollars is now fifty times that.

Every Country For Itself As European Unity Collapses In An Attack Of Jitters

Germany shattered any semblance of European unity on the global credit crisis last night by announcing that it was ready to guarantee €568 billion of personal savings in domestic accounts. The move – which came as Berlin announced a new rescue package for an ailing mortgage bank – is sure to anger France, which, holding the European Union presidency, tried to create the illusion of a common front at a weekend summit in Paris. Instead, the message coming loud and clear from Berlin is that it is every man for himself. Or as President Nicolas Sarkozy would prefer not to say:sauve qui peut.

The Federal Reserve - The Greatest Scam In History

We first posted this article on 13th August 2007 when it appeared to us that the US Dollar along with the economy was heading into such dangerous waters that gold would be the beneficiary. At the time gold was trading at around $670/oz and it closed yesterday at $834.80 for a gain of $164.80 or 24%.
If we fast forward to time now and read any newspaper the headlines are dominated with the fire fighting actions being implemented by the Federal Reserve with bankers and politicians in tow. From these bailouts we can only conclude that the dilution of paper money will continue with the pace of dilution accelerating, resulting in massive inflation and propelling the precious metals to higher ground. If you have the time, please read this article and then take a look at what’s happening around you and then find the time to question what you are doing and why you are doing it. Being too busy to organise your own affairs is a poor excuse. Just switch the television off for a couple of nights and clear your head, the way forward for you personally will become apparent.

US Crisis An Historic Opportunity For World Peace

The people of China and Japan now have in their hands a historic opportunity to create permanent peace on earth. The inbred clans that have been fomenting vast wars around the planet for the past several hundred years are bankrupt. If the Asians have the courage, they will demand, in exchange for agreeing to a bail-out, that the Americans and Europeans participate in negotiations to create a world government.

This would not be the tyrannical New World Order long planned by the white elite. Rather it would be a government that works for the interests of the average person and life form on this planet. Such a government would be the minimum necessary to replace war with court battles and ensure equal opportunity for all humans and safety for all creatures.

We need such a government because humanity has already wiped out 30% of the species on the planet even as millions starve and wars rage. This is because the world financial system we know have acts like a giant black hole sucking money away from the poor and the weak. Simply by taking money from trillionaires who could never possibly spend it, we could put $100,000 in the hands of each person on earth.

McDeregulation

There is a man running for president who actually believes -- right now -- that deregulation has been a great thing for the U-S economy... He has surrounded himself with lobbyists who made millions pushing for the regulatory changes that facilitated the current crisis... And he thinks that deregulation of the banking industry has been so great... we should do the exact same thing with -- make that "to" -- health care. Naturally his campaign today conducted a conference call to announce the New York Times can no longer be considered a news organization... and when Politico-Dot-Com chronicles the factual errors the campaign makes during the conference call... the campaign declares the Politico writer is quote "in the tank." Our fifth story on the Countdown: The Political Implosion of John McCain.
