Stephen Fry: The Catholic Church is Not a Force For Good in the World

  1. Captivating speech by Fry ashame the Pope wasn't in direct earshot.
l remember having to go to Church and Sunday School as a kid still sleepy eyed, l think it was a means of Mum having time off while she caught up on domestic duties and Sunday roast, without us 4 kids under her feet.

l have little recollection of it other than wearing my best clothes, colouring in bible picture things and yawning while the teacher person spoke stuff.
At Xmas time l was all excited when given a bible as a present which l never read because it wasn't like a comic book, l only read Mad Magazine, The Archies, Wendy the Witch or Casper the friendly ghost...tasty kid stories.
Maybe if someone like the captivating Fry was a teacher l'd of payed more attention...ha.

  2. Well, to add my few pence into the mix...

I suppose it is not religion that is the problem per se, the people who want to control and dictate to people is the main issue while they remain hypocrites and do exactly what they like. This is the typical order of the day.

Besides, I was brought up in a religious (Christian), although I no longer attend church, I think it was a good foundation for knowing right from wrong, having consideration for others, manners and so on, not stealing, lying or trying to cheat other people. I mean having good values and teaching good values cannot be wrong after all, the problem is that some of these so called Saints (Pope etc) don't practice what they preach!

Also, I had various Bibles growing up and the one I had always had nice colourful pictures, I remember I used to lie in bed reading it, I thought it was interesting.

I also attended church every Sunday (I even served in the altar), until the age of 22, when I decided to retire to the congregation. I wanted to stop because I hated all the attention of people looking up to me as a Saint (when I an clearly not one, because I have faults just like every other person) and people prying into my private life, when it is clearly none of their business.

However, religion (if people are practising what they preach and not being hypocrites) is a good thing or it can be.
