A council chief executive is to retain his £116,000 salary despite cutting down from a five to a four-day week so he can improve his 'work-life balance'.
Dr Steven Halls is being granted a reduced working week in order to 'indulge in his love of music' and other outside interests.
Three Rivers District Council says the deal will cost less than hiring a replacement and even claims he is underpaid.
Ann Shaw, leader of the Liberal Democrat-run council based in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, said: 'It's about work-life balance.
'He has other outside interests that he wants to indulge in, such as music and his work as a magistrate.
