'US Missile System Threatens Russia'

A senior Russian military official says the deployment of an American missile system on European soil will greatly undermine Moscow's nuclear deterrence capability.

"The situation completely changes with the realization of the third and fourth stages of the missile system," state-run RIA Novosti quoted Chief of Main Operations Directorate of Russia's General Staff Lt. Gen. Andrei Tretyak as saying on Friday.

"Four hundred interceptor missiles on 40 warships and a missile site in Poland. This is a real threat to our strategic nuclear forces," he added. Tretyak pointed out that US plans for a missile system in Europe comes despite the fact that Russia has never had any plans to deploy missile elements outside its borders.
