Holbrooke died on Monday evening at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., The New York Times cited an official of the Obama administration as saying.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the family had yet to make a formal announcement of Holbrooke's death.
Under four presidents, Holbrooke made a career that started with Vietnam, was the architect of the 1995 Bosnia peace plan, and served as President Barack Obama's special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan since 2009. He was also a diplomatic troubleshooter in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.'
