Ehud Olmert, the outgoing Israeli prime minister, has said Israel must reconcile itself to giving up most of the land it occupied in 1967 and divide Jerusalem if it ever wants to live in peace with its Arab neighbours.
While he hinted at this position during his two and a half years in power, Mr Olmert's remarks, made in a valedictory newspaper interview as he prepares to stand down, represent a significant shift for the Israeli leadership.
The willingness to share control of Jerusalem amounts almost to heresy in a country where generations of leaders have committed themselves to the city as the eternal and undivided capital of the Jewish state.
It remains to be seen whether his successor as prime minister, most likely to be Tzipi Livni who is currently trying to forge a new ruling coalition, would take his advice.
But the remarks, and his observation that Israeli leaders have been blinkered and unrealistic in their handling of peace negotiations, represented a paradigm shift of thinking.
