Brazilian Army to Stay Longer in Rio
The Brazilian military forces will continue to stay in Rio de Janeiro city as peacekeepers following the crackdown on drug traffickers last month.
The decision was made based on a request from the governor of Rio in order to make sure the drug gangs will not return to the slum areas again, AFP quoted Defense Minister Nelson Jobin as saying on Saturday.
The military's continued presence in Rio has got approval of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The Brazilian leader approved the request for hundreds of soldiers to remain in the Compexo do Alemao for the time being.'
