Strong Quake Devastates Southern Iran

massive earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has jolted the southern port city of Bandar Khamir in Iran's Hormozgan Province. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the Wednesday quake, which struck around 1100 GMT, was about 53 km (33 miles) west of Bandar Abbas at a depth of 34.6 miles (55 km). Head of Hormozgan's provincial disaster management headquarters, Yasser Hazbavi, said that the quake has demolished nearly 200 villages, killing at least four people and injuring 26 others. Rescue teams have been dispatched to the area.
