Surge in Kids’ CT Scans Raises Concerns

Soaring numbers of kids are getting CT scans in emergency rooms, a study has found, raising concerns that some of them might be exposed to adult-sized radiation doses and an increased risk of developing cancer.

The number of ER visits nationwide in which children were given CT scans surged from about 330,000 in 1995 to 1.65 million in 2008 — a five-fold increase. 'Japan Radiation 7.5 Million Times Legal Limit'

Radioactive readings found in Japan seawater has reached millions of times higher than the legal limit, the operator of Fukushima's damaged nuclear plant says.

According to the findings, seawater samples taken from the water near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant's No. 2 reactor several days ago were contaminated with radioactive iodine-131, seven and a half million times the legal limit, AP reported.

More recent findings, however, indicated that the reading has dropped to five million as of Monday.'

US-led foreign forces have shot dead at least six civilians and kidnapped five others in the troubled northern Afghanistan, officials say.

Afghan officials in Sari Pul Province said the civilians died when NATO forces raided the town of Sayyad, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Mir Hossein Sajjadi, governor of Sayyad district, says five other people have been abducted by foreign forces.

Al Qaeda is exploiting the conflict in Libya to acquire weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, and smuggle them to a stronghold in northern Mali, a security official from neighbouring Algeria told Reuters.

The official said a convoy of eight Toyota pick-up trucks left eastern Libya, crossed into Chad and then Niger, and from there into northern Mali where in the past few days it delivered a cargo of weapons.

He said the weapons included Russian-made RPG-7 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades, Kalashnikov heavy machine guns, Kalashnikov rifles, explosives and ammunition.

French and UN helicopters have attacked Ivory Coast's presidential palace in the main city of Abidjan where incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo has been holed up.

The copters targeted Gbagbo's residence and military barracks in Abidjan hours after forces loyal to internationally recognized Ivory Coast President-elect Alassane Ouattara launched a new offensive against Gbagbo on Monday, AFP reported.

Washington has denied reports that it has signed an agreement with BP, allowing the energy giant to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The German government plans to phase out all nuclear power plants in the country by 2020, a decision that could cost millions of euros in losses every year for the utility industries.

When we think of human trafficking most of us immediately assume that this occurs only in the arena of sexual exploitation. At some point in time this may have been true. Today, human trafficking encompasses many forms and there is not one of us who can safely assume that we would somehow be exempt from any type of human trafficking.

While the sexual exploitation and trafficking for the purposes of sex is often highlighted in MSM, rarely do they ever report on the trafficking that occurs courtesy of our courts, unscrupulous politicians and yes, even those demi-gods….doctors, therapists and psychiatrists. There is money to be made exploiting the vulnerable, the sick, the weak, the aging (with assets) and even children who have been unfortunate enough to become wards of the state and forced into foster care.

Is Nobel Peace Prize Winner Obama More Brutal than Bush?

Bush is correctly regarded as a lying, war-mongering, torturing tyrant. Is Nobel peace prize winner Obama even worse?

Many governments, U.S. congressmen and other individuals have demanded that Obama return his Nobel peace prize for bombing Libya without congressional approval.

Bush got us into 2 wars to protect our strategic national interests in ... er ... broccoli. Obama just got us into a third war for the same reason. Bush's decision to invade Iraq was met with large protests. Similarly, most Americans didn't want Obama to get involved in Libya.

The Bush administration funded terrorist groups (and see confirming articles here and here). Obama is allegedly funding terrorist groups in Iran, and is now aiding the Libyan "rebels", even though there are allegations that 1,000 of them are Al Qaeda radicals (and there are some indications that their leader is a CIA asset).

US Agrees to Continue Libya Airstrikes

The United States has agreed to a NATO's request for a 48-hour extension of American participation in the Western coalition's airstrikes on Libya.

Air Force AC-130 gunships, A-10 Thunderbolts and Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers will continue to attack troops loyal to embattled Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi and other sites through Monday evening, the Associated Press reported on Sunday.

The US is shifting the combat role to Britain, France and other allies; however, American air power is still in demand.

Over 10% of World N-Plants at Risk

Scores of nuclear power plants worldwide are at risk from either tsunamis or earthquakes similar to the natural disasters that crippled Japan's Fukushima reactors, a new research shows.

Experts have warned that many at-risk plants are in countries less able to cope with a disaster than Japan, reported The Independent.

Seventy-six operating power stations in Japan, Taiwan, China, South Korea, India, Pakistan and the US are located in areas close to coastlines deemed vulnerable to tsunamis.

Yemen Police Injure Over 400 Protesters

Yemeni police's live fire injured over 400 anti-government protesters who tried marching toward the presidential palace in the Red Sea city of Hudaidah.

Thousands of demonstrators had planned a 2 a.m. march to protest the Sunday's crackdown on protesters in Taiz, south of capital Sana'a, that killed two people and injured over a hundred others. Police fired live rounds and tear gas against the crowd that wounded at least 409 people.

The protesters are demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Salah who has often signaled that he has no intention of resigning soon.
