Palestinian Authority Sentences Palestinian Journalist to 18 Months in Prison

A Palestinian Authority court has sentenced a Palestinian journalist with the official Hamas-run television channel to 18 months in prison over affiliation to the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The court on Tuesday ruled that the 37-year-old reporter, Tariq Abu Zaid, who works for the official Hamas-run television network Al-Aqsa TV, must serve the term since acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has forbidden Hamas and affiliated organizations from conducting any activities in the occupied West Bank.'

Girl Aged Six Handcuffed and Committed to Mental Institution for Classroom Behaviour

A Port St. Lucie first-grade student was handcuffed and committed to a mental health facility because of her classroom behavior, and her parents are furious that the school took such extreme measures.

Mickey Shalansky explained Wednesday what he said happened to his 6-year-old daughter at Parkway Elementary.

"She couldn't put her in two handcuffs because her wrists are that small, so she put them both in the same handcuff and left marks on my daughter's arms," Shalansky told WPBF 25 News' Bob Kaple.'

NATO: Afghan Civilians Not Killed by Accident

A British commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan insists that the strike that killed a dozen civilians last weekend, in fact, hit its intended target.

Major General Nick Carter said on Tuesday that the launched rockets did not veer off course, as previously claimed, but had struck the intended mark.

"We know now that the missile arrived at the target it was supposed to arrive at. It wasn't a rogue missile. There was no technical fault in it," Reuters quoted Carter as saying.'

Stop Monsanto's GMO Contamination

During the Bush administration, Monsanto illegally won USDA approval for its genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa by convincing regulators to bypass a mandatory environmental review. In response to a lawsuit by consumer groups, the courts then stepped in and banned GE alfalfa until the USDA followed the law.

In December, the USDA released its belated review of Monsanto's GE alfalfa seed and determined that Monsanto's alfalfa met the Obama Administration's standards, despite the risk of organic contamination.

This conclusion came despite the acknowledgment by USDA researchers that GE alfalfa is virtually certain to "contaminate" normal seeds. Cross-contamination is the number one concern with genetically engineered crops.'

Total Madness: 'Cut Working Week to 21 hours', Urges Think Tank

The working week should be cut to 21 hours to help boost the economy and improve quality of life, a left-wing think tank has said.

The New Economics Foundation claimed in a report the reduction in hours would help to ease unemployment and overwork.

The think tank said people were working longer hours now than 30 years ago even though unemployment was at 2.5 million.

The foundation admitted people would earn less, but said they would have more time to carry out worthy tasks.

They would have better scope to look after children or other dependants, there would be more opportunity for civic duties, and older people could even delay retirement, it said.'

An eminent Scottish scientist is facing calls to resign from the "climategate" inquiry, amid concerns over his impartiality.

Only 24 hours after another panel member quit, questions emerged over Professor Geoffrey Boulton because of his previous views that climate change is caused by human activity.

The investigation was set up to look into whether scientists at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) covered up flawed data.

Israeli Warplanes Draw Lebanese Anti-Aircraft Fire

The Lebanese Army has opened anti-aircraft fire on intruding Israeli military aircrafts flying low over its airspace, reports indicate.

The Lebanese forces launched the defensive fire on four intruding aircrafts "overflying southern Lebanon, Hasbaya, the Shouf and the Bekaa," all in southeastern Lebanon, read an army statement quoted by the AFP.

One such incident last month prompted deputy spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon Andrea Tenenti to warn about Israel's violation of the Lebanese airspace. Tenenti said the incursions were in contravention of the UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended a 33-day Israeli war on Lebanon in the summer of 2006.

The incident follows last month's threat of another war on Lebanon by an Israeli minister.'

Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers.
Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’.
The data is crucial to the famous ‘hockey stick graph’ used by climate change advocates to support the theory.

Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now – suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon.
And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no ‘statistically significant’ warming.'

Teenage girls are being rewarded with shopping vouchers for having the cervical cancer jab.

Girls aged 16 to 18 are being given £45 of vouchers if they complete an inoculation course against the HPV virus, the sexually transmitted infection that causes 70 per cent of cervical tumours.

A national campaign to vaccinate girls aged 12 to 18 has been criticised over fears it may encourage promiscuity and raise pregnancy rates, and uptake has been low among girls aged 16 to 18.'

USA Accidentally Admits That Iran Has No Nuclear Weapons Program

Western countries reacted with cynicism to Iran's declaration, with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner describing the plan as a political bluff.

Kouchner claimed that Iran does not have the ability to enrich uranium to 20 percent and accused Tehran of "blackmail."

White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs Thursday cast doubt on the announcement that Iran produced the first batch of 20 percent uranium.

Detroit Schools Offer Class in How to Work at Walmart

Four inner-city Detroit high schools have decided that employment with Walmart is an opportunity worth training their students to pursue. The schools have teamed up with the giant merchandiser to offer a for-credit class in job-readiness training that also includes entry-level after-school jobs.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the principal at one of the schools optimistically suggested that "the program will allow students an opportunity to earn money and to be exposed to people from different cultures -- since all of the stores are in the suburbs."

The announcement of the program outraged Donna Stern, the Midwest coordinator for the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration & Immigrant Rights And Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). Children's Tantrums May be Re-Classed as Psychiatric Disorders

Childhood temper tantrums, teenage irritability and binge eating may soon rate as psychiatric disorders in the US, according to proposed changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the bible of the psychiatric profession.

The proposals are the product of a 10-year effort to update the handbook, which influences the vast network of American healthcare providers, insurance companies, courts, prisons and universities. At stake are billions of dollars in insurance payments, pharmaceutical sales and medical fees. The proposed revisions, published online today , will be subject to public comment until late April.'

Tonge Sacked for Israeli Organ Theft in Haiti Comments

Baroness Jenny Tonge has been sacked as the Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for health in Britain's House of Lords for urging an inquiry into charges that Israeli forces in Haiti harvested organs.

In response, Liberal Democrat Party Leader Nick Clegg sacked Tonge and dismissed her comments as unacceptable, provocative, and distasteful.'

Israeli Deputy FM Hints at Ethnic Cleansing Policy

The Israeli deputy foreign minister has suggested that all Arab Israelis should eventually be transferred to a future Palestinian state.

In an interview published in the Arabic-language newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said that Arab Israelis are proud of being Palestinians and thus have nothing to lose "if they decide to go and live within a Palestinian state."

The statement has angered Arab Israeli MPs, who said in very stern remarks that no one can dictate to Arab citizens to tell them where to live.'
