7.2 Quake Sways Northwestern Mexico

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has struck the northwestern Mexican state of Baja California Norte, shaking buildings and creating panic as far as Los Angeles, the US Geological Survey reported on Sunday.

The quake struck at 2240 GMT at a depth of 20.1 miles (32.3 kilometers) and 16 miles (26 kilometers) south southwest of Guadalupe Victoria, Baja California Norte, Mexico.

Mexican civil protection officials said a man died when his home collapsed outside Mexicali, while local media reports said a number of people were still trapped in their homes in the town near the earthquake's epicenter.'
