Sarkozy Urges Creation of 'Viable Palestinian State'

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has called for the 'rapid resumption' of the Middle East peace talks urging the creation of a 'viable Palestinian state.'

Speaking after a meeting with the acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas in Paris, Sarkozy said Monday, “We want a Palestinian state but we want a viable state.”

However, he challenged his Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner's Sunday remarks in which the top French diplomat had called for a “proclamation of a Palestinian State, and its immediate recognition by the international community, even before negotiating its borders".'
