BP Gulf Catastrophe Typifies Corporate Behavior in America

The Gulf of Mexico oil catastrophe, now in its 35th day, has struck land, coating tourist beaches, marshes and shorelines with a greasy black filth that metaphorically represents the corporate greed that now dominates the U.S. economy. We are all awash in the dark slime of corporations gone bad, and now we're paying the price for allowing these companies to dominate our media, our government and our entire economy.

You might think government regulators could have prevented all this, but that's hardly the case. This disaster isn't merely about a government regulation failure; it's about what happens when you let corporations rule Washington.'

Police Staff 'Hired' Out to Supermarkets and Universities

Forces across the country earned at least £17 million between them last year by providing staff to the private sector.

Police chiefs last night admitted "partnerships" are needed to help maintain budgets in an ever tighter economic climate.

Forces have been told they must find savings of more than £500 million a year on the national budget by 2014.

The majority of the staff being "hired" out are police community support officers which will raise fresh questions over their role and effectiveness.'

Most Decorated US Marine General: Purpose of All US Wars is Billions for Insiders’ Profits

Smedley Butler was the most honored man in Marine Corps history. He wrote and spoke that the purpose of US wars is millions and billions in profits for America’s leading “bankers, industrialists, and speculators.” War is a “racket:” a deception whereby its purpose of blood money from American taxpayers to “insiders” is always disguised as noble and necessary ventures to keep Americans propagandized into paying again and again.'

Haiti’s Elite Eyes Profits as Millions Face Disease and Hunger

"A crisis is a terrible thing to waste," Georges Sassine, president of Haiti’s manufacturers association, told the Washington Post.

"This is what the earthquake is today—an opportunity, a huge opportunity," added Reginald Boulos, described by the Post Monday as the owner of a "small empire" of supermarkets, a hotel and a car dealership. "I think we need to give the message that we are open for business. This is really a land of opportunities."

Meanwhile, "US firms have begun jockeying for a bonanza of cleanup work," the Miami Herald reported last week, adding that "At least two politically connected US firms have enlisted powerful local allies in Haiti to help compete for the high-stakes business".'

American Cancer Society Admits Mammograms and Cancer Screenings are Over-Hyped

Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, recently participated in an interview with the New York Times concerning a Journal of the American Medical Association analysis of breast and prostate cancer screening. The study questioned the legitimacy of such screenings in saving lives, a notion confirmed by Dr. Brawley as legitimate.

Adding that the supposed benefits of screening have been "exaggerated", Dr. Brawley's comments have fueled a firestorm of controversy since they fly in the face of what the organization has been saying and promoting for years.'

Leaked UN Report Claims Swine Flu Could 'Kill Millions' and Cause 'Anarchy' in Poor Nations

A UN report leaked to The Observer claims that swine flu could "kill millions" of people in poor nations and cause a total breakdown of society unless wealthy nations come up with US$1.5 billion to pay for pandemic vaccines and anti-viral drugs.

So what's the real story behind all this? All be blunt: In my opinion, this report is just another Big Pharma scam. It's designed to scare people into sending even more money to the drug companies to buy their drugs and vaccines. The threat of the "complete collapse" of these poorer nations is designed to leverage first-world fear to motivate these nations to spend more money on precisely the things that make the pharmaceutical industry wealthy.

Goldman Sachs Raking in Massive Profits

Due to the fact that Goldman Sachs is currently the favorite of Washington they are raking in massive profits during a time when most banks and brokerage firms are struggling for survival.

Due to a very successful second quarter, Goldman has set aside $226,156 per employee in compensation – a 75% increase per employee. That means annualized compensation could be $1 million per employee for the year. We find this of great interest inasmuch as the recently converted bank received a $10 billion taxpayer bailout via Goldman’s connections in Washington. They also received a myriad of benefits from several other government schemes over the past two years. It is nice to know that in part American taxpayers made this possible while unemployment is running on a U6 basis at 20.5%, and Americans are losing their homes by the millions.

Flashback 2007: Japan Issues Tamiflu Warning After Child Deaths

The Japanese government has warned doctors that Tamiflu, the drug being stockpiled around the world as a defence against a bird flu pandemic, should not be prescribed to teenagers for fear that it can lead to bizarre and self-destructive behaviour.

Tokyo’s Ministry of Health and Welfare today instructed the Japanese distributor of the drug to include a warning not to give the drug to patients aged between 10 and 19, after reports that at least 18 Japanese children taking Tamiflu have died as a result of irrational behaviour.

Concern over Tamiflu will complicate international preparations for a catastrophic bird flu pandemic, against which it is seen as the final line of defence. A

However, the European Medicine Agency (EMEA), which licences the drug in Europe, said that there was no equivalent warning in Europe as they had not found any link between the drug and any deaths.

Japan consumes 60 per cent of the world’s Tamiflu, the drug also known as oseltamivir, and manufactured by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche. Britain has purchased enough courses of the drug to treat 25 per cent of the population if there was an outbreak of a bird flu pandemic.

Despite scores of deaths in south-east Asia, there have been no cases of human bird flu in Japan, and the 8.6 million people who receive the drug every year are suffering from the common form of human influenza.

But for the past three years, there have been alarming stories of young people succumbing to fits of self-destructive behaviour while receiving Tamiflu.

Relatives who believe that their children were adversely affected by the drug have formed a lobby group to demand its withdrawal from sale.

One of the most disturbing cases was in February 2004 when a 17-year old boy took one capsule of Tamiflu at his home in Gifu prefecture, central Japan. No one was at home to witness what happened next, but he appears to have left the house in his pyjamas, walked barefoot through a snowstorm, climbed over two fences and stepped in front of an oncoming truck. The driver told police that he was smiling at the moment of impact.

At the end of last month, a fourteen year old boy in the city of Sendai told his mother that he was going to the toilet, but then walked out of the front door of his eleven storey apartment. His mother ran out to see him straddling the four foot guard rail and despite her cries of warning he fell to his death in the car park below. He had taken two Tamiflu capsules, the first day of a five day prescribed course for influenza.

According to Japan’s health ministry, most of the 54 Japanese who died after taking Tamiflu by October last year, succumbed to liver or other organ failure, most likely caused by influenza. But 16 of them were children aged 16 or under, several of whom had exhibited “abnormal” behaviour.

The drug is already sold in Japan with a general warning that users may have psychological side effects including abnormal behaviour and hallucinations.
