Yes or No: Ireland Keeps its Commissioner

I interviewed Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on the fringes of the meeting where he admitted the Swedes are working on a contingency plan in case of a no vote. He also gave a pretty frank assessment of what is likely to happen if the Irish public finally deals a death blow to the Lisbon treaty.

According to Reinfeldt, a no vote would be respected and the Nice treaty would prevail. Contrary to some of the exaggerated claims of yes campaigners the sky wouldn’t fall on Ireland’s head. It is the EU as a whole that would be damaged as the endless navel-gazing EU institutional debate continues to divert attention from other important issues.
But it was his comments on how to cope with the stipulation in Nice- that the number of commissioners must be less than the number of states in the next EU executive- that were most interesting. He said a “26 plus one” plan is favoured by diplomats and the probable solution. This would see 26 states retaining their commissioner and the 27th state getting the plum job of EU foreign affairs chief instead to comply with the Nice treaty rules.

Brits Tell Goons With Needles To Stick It Where The Sun Don’t Shine

The trial balloon went up today on the UK government’s efforts to impose a mass mandatory vaccination program against swine flu, but judging from the response on a major newspaper website, millions of British citizens will tell the goons with needles to stick it where the sun don’t shine.

Sky News reports today that, “The entire population could be vaccinated against swine flu as health chiefs draw up plans to build a nationwide immunity to the disease.”

According to health authorities, they plan to have 60 million plus UK citizens vaccinated by this time next year, despite the fact that only one healthy person has died from swine flu in Britain.

The resounding response to the government’s efforts to prepare everyone to accept the shot is a vehement, “I don’t think so!”

EU Steps Up Pressure On Ireland To Hold Second Lisbon Treaty Referendum

Brian Cowen, Ireland's Prime Minister, must explain to a summit of Europe's leaders next Wednesday how he is planning to resuscitate the EU Treaty, which was rejected by Irish voters in June.
While the final decision will be taken in December, Mr Cowen will hear demands from France and Germany that a second referendum take place as early as March 2009, before European elections.
Brussels diplomats have warned Ireland that it is isolated after angering other EU countries, such as Britain, by taking controversial financial crisis measures that benefited Irish banks while "dumping on others".
"The economy might be going into freefall and the Irish really did not help things. Sympathy for their difficulties is running out," said a diplomat.
