Fury as Commons Denied DNA Vote

Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, has been warned that the government risks further damaging the public's faith in politics after it emerged that plans for the police to keep innocent people's DNA profiles for up to 12 years will become law without a Commons vote.

Opposition parties and civil liberty groups united to condemn plans that are being steered through parliament while MPs are distracted by the expenses row.

Smith's DNA Database by Stealth

It is perhaps ironic that the home secretary should seem so hellbent on collecting the nation's DNA while still reeling from the embarrassment of her husband's presumed attempts to spill his at the taxpayer's expense.

If it is irony then it is doubly so, as Smith is the minister charged with upholding the rule of law yet has such utter contempt for it and its principles. The EU court ruling stated very clearly that the DNA profiles and samples of the 850,000 innocent people currently on the database should be removed.

Smith's response is to leave them on the DNA database for between six and 12 years. At best this is a childish kind of belligerent foot-dragging and at worst it is plain illegal. What is certain is that campaigners will challenge this, and once again Smith will be hauled into court.

Undesirable? I'd Swap Jackboot Jacqui For a Shock Jock Any Day...

Apart from lying about where she lives for the purposes of fiddling her expenses, it was revealed yesterday that Jackboot Jacqui has been telling the tax authorities a different story altogether.
She maintains that her family house in Redditch is her second home, so she can claim tens of thousands of pounds in parliamentary allowances to which she is not entitled.
But she also registers the Redditch property as her principal residence with her local council, which means she won't have to pay capital gains tax when she comes to sell it.
Meanwhile, she pretends to the Commons fees office that her sister's spare bedroom in South London is her 'main' residence.
And that allows her famously to charge 'second home' expenses for Redditch - up to and including the kitchen sink, a patio heater and her husband's pornographic movies.
This isn't just an abuse of the system, it's wholesale theft and criminal deception. In any other line of work she'd be helping the Fraud Squad with their inquiries.
Hardly surprising, then, that No10 was putting it about this week that she's going to be sacked as Home Secretary in a few weeks' time, as Gordon seeks scapegoats for his selfinflicted meltdown.
To add to her woes, she is certain to be ejected from her ultra-marginal seat at the next General Election.
That wouldn't just see her lose her salary and the bent expenses which go with the job, it would also mean the end of the £40,000 a year she pays her husband out of public funds to
All in all, the future's pretty bleak for old Jackboots. With her record of dishonesty, what sensible employer would want to take her on? Perhaps she is hoping for a lucrative directorship from one of the
firms bidding to run the £20 billion national ID cards scheme.
Why else would she be forging ahead with this ludicrously expensive project, in the teeth of all logic? You'd think
she'd have more pressing problems to deal with. But, as if that wasn't enough, she's also forcing through another monstrous affront to civil liberties by grinding
on with the establishment of a sinister DNA database, which will store intimate profiles of hundreds of thousands of people who have never been convicted of any offence.
This not only runs counter to our centuries-old presumption of innocence, but also flies in the face of Labour's beloved European Court of Yuman Rites, which has ruled the plan illegal.
And Jackboots still found time this week to issue a list of 'undesirables' who will be excluded from Britain.
They include a couple of violent skinheads, currently serving a ten-year prison sentence in Russia, and an obscure American shock jock, who says that not only has he no intention of visiting Britain, he now intends to sue Jackboots for defamation.
WHAT on earth was she doing trawling the jails of Eastern Europe and the airwaves of America for people to exclude from Britain? Why single out this motley crew - and why now?
All this manic activity from a woman who should be lucky to get a job selling the Big Issue in Redditch High Street this time next year.
Maybe she entertains the vain hope that if she does as much damage as possible now, she'll be rewarded with a seat in the Lords later, which would allow her to carry on with her lavish, larcenous lifestyle.

If there was any justice, she'd be banged up in Holloway and spend the rest of her life on her own ghastly DNA database. Pity we can't exclude her from Britain.

Wrongly Accused People Could Have DNA on Database for 12 years

The DNA profiles of people released without charge or found not guilty by a court could be stored for up to 12 years on a national police database.

The proposal, announced by Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, is in response to a European court ruling that criticised the Government for keeping genetic records of innocent people.

Opponents accused ministers of defying the spirit of the court’s decision by drawing a distinction between DNA samples, which will be destroyed, and the genetic profiles they generate.

The judgment last year ruled that the indefinite storage of samples, profiles and fingerprints of everyone arrested was unlawful.

Jacqui Smith's Secret Plan to Carry on Snooping

SPY chiefs are pressing ahead with secret plans to monitor all internet use and telephone calls in Britain despite an announcement by Jacqui Smith, the home secretary, of a ministerial climbdown over public surveillance.

GCHQ, the government’s eavesdropping centre, is developing classified technology to intercept and monitor all e-mails, website visits and social networking sessions in Britain. The agency will also be able to track telephone calls made over the internet, as well as all phone calls to land lines and mobiles.

The £1 billion snooping project — called Mastering the Internet (MTI) — will rely on thousands of “black box” probes being covertly inserted across online infrastructure.

UK Ministers Refuse to Appear Before Human Rights Panel

Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith have both refused to appear before Parliament’s human rights committee to answer questions about allegations of British collusion in the torture of British citizens and residents detained during counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan.

In a move that dismayed members of the Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR), a joint letter from the foreign secretary and home secretary is also said to have failed to answer any of the eight questions that the committee asked about legal provisions offering MI5 officers immunity in the UK for crimes committed overseas. The JCHR is now asking Jonathan Evans, the director-general of MI5, to appear before it to be questioned about the agency’s policy and the conduct of his officers.

According to a report in the Guardian on Saturday, MPs and peers on the committee are also expected to demand again that Miliband and Smith answer their questions, while its chairman, Andrew Dismore, says the ministers’ refusal may trigger demands for an independent inquiry into the allegations.

Jacqui the Nazi to Face Inquiry Over Expenses

The Home Secretary was put under increasing pressure yesterday when an investigation began into claims that she is misusing her parliamentary housing allowance.

Jacqui Smith has been criticised for designating her sister's house in London as her “main home”, allowing her to claim more than £20,000 a year for her “second home”. She has claimed at least £116,000 in second-home allowances for her constituency home in Redditch, Worcestershire, where her family live.

John Lyon, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, said yesterday that he had accepted a complaint involving information from Ms Smith's London neighbours, who contacted David Cameron's office. Last week Mr Lyon turned down two earlier requests.

The decision to look into Ms Smith's housing arrangements follow allegations by a couple who live in the same street, Dominic Taplin, a businessman who used to be co-owner of the London nightclubs Abigail's Party and Legends, and his wife Jessica, a manager for a charity. They live four doors from Ms Smith and say that she is often there for as few as two nights a week and spends little time there during the long parliamentary recesses.

Brown In Knife Crime Spin Row

Gordon Brown has been rebuked by the statistics watchdog for his "irregular and selective" use of knife crime figures.

Sir Michael Scholar, head of the UK Statistics Authority, protested that figures put out on Thursday had not been checked and warned that putting them out prematurely was "corrosive of public trust".

Both the Prime Minister and Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, trumpeted a report apparently showing stabbings had fallen by a quarter in areas where police stepped up searches of young people.
