The giant US banks have been bailed out again from huge potential writeoffs by loosey-goosey accounting accepted by the accounting profession and the regulators.

They are allowed to accrue interest on non-performing mortgages ” until the actual foreclosure takes place, which on average takes about 16 months.

This means that Bank of America, Citigroup, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo, among hundreds of other smaller institutions, can report interest due them, but not paid, on an estimated $1.4 trillion of face value mortgages on the 7 million homes that are in the process of being foreclosed.'

When people consider the connections between drugs and violence, what typically comes to mind are illegal drugs like crack cocaine. However, certain medications — most notably, some antidepressants like Prozac — have also been linked to increase risk for violent, even homicidal behavior.

One reason that most Haitians did not vote is that the most popular political party in the country, Fanmi Lavalas, was arbitrarily excluded from the ballot. This was also done in April 2009, in parliamentary elections, and more than 90% of voters did not vote. By contrast, in the 2006 presidential elections, participation was 59.3%. And it has been higher in the past, even for the parliamentary (non-presidential) election in 2000.'

17 Homes and School Demolished by Israel in South Hebron Hills

On Wednesday, early in the morning, dozens of Israeli soldiers, 4 bulldozers and some 25 jeeps invaded and demolished the small Bedouin village of Al-Daqeqa, East of Yatta in the southern Hebron Hills.

According to the Alternative Information Center (AIC), Israeli forces demolished all 17 of the homes in Al-Daqeqa. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Education office in Hebron, Israel also demolished the only school in the village, a shed containing six classrooms.

The 300 villagers refused to leave their homes when the soldiers arrived. Soldiers proceeded to attack them, arresting 4.'

Forces, Tanks Stream to Capital Tunis

Security forces and tanks have streamed to Tunisia's capital city, Tunis, as authorities try to quell mounting anti-government protests.

Security is tight in Tunisia's capital on Thursday, a day after clashes broke out between protesters and the police, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Heavy troop presence has been reported in Tunis and security forces have been taking up positions at major intersections in the city.

Eleven people were reportedly killed in clashes across Tunisia on Wednesday.'

US State Considers Alternative to Dollar

The Commonwealth of Virginia is planning to file a bill under which it would begin minting its own gold and silver coins as an alternative currency to the US dollar.

Virginia's Republican Delegate Bob Marshall, from Prince William County, was to ask the General Assembly to consider the idea on Wednesday when it convenes for its annual legislative session, The Washington Post reported.

It is a companion bill to a proposal Marshall has already filed to establish a study committee to examine alternative currencies to that distributed by the Federal Reserve System "in the event of a major breakdown of the Federal Reserve System".'

Lebanon's army say Israeli troops have once again breached the country's sovereignty, crossing into the Lebanese territory and kidnapping a civilian.

A statement released by the Lebanese army on Wednesday said that an Israeli patrol has crossed into the southern village of Rmeish and abducted a Lebanese shepherd.

"In a flagrant assault on residents of southern Lebanon, enemy troops crossed the technical fence south of the village of Rmeish and kidnapped a Lebanese man, whom they took back into the occupied territories," the statement said.'

Claims that the "Great Garbage Patch" between California and Japan is twice the size of Texas is "grossly exaggerated" said the research which reckons it is more like one per cent the size.

Further reports that the oceans are filled with more plastic than plankton, and that the patch has been growing tenfold each decade since the 1950s are equally misleading, the new research claimed.

In reality it often cannot even be seen from the deck of a passing boat, said the latest analysts from the Oregon State University professor of oceanography Angelicque White.'

Man Fined $5,200 for Growing Cucumbers in Basement

Mission, British Columbia, resident Len Gratto recently experienced the wrath of local city officials who fined him $5,200 for growing cucumbers in his basement. Under current laws, municipal regulators are permitted to enter premises on suspicion that a homeowner is illegally growing marijuana -- and even if no pot is found, they can levy the fines anyway.

"It's upsetting they can do this," explained Gratto to The Province. "We were growing cucumbers in the basement because they wouldn't take outside".'

Snow Emergency Declared in New York

New York City has declared a weather emergency as weather forecasters warn that a new storm is set to hit the northeast of the United States and cause several flight cancellations.

The US National Weather Service is predicting a wave of steady snow to develop and head up the eastern seaboard, while another one is moving in from the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

The two low pressure systems are set to merge off the mid-Atlantic coast and rapidly intensify late Tuesday.

The blast of snow is expected to make a landfall late Tuesday local time and into the overnight hours with the heaviest snow to fall east of New York City.'

'Making it Easier to Sack Bad Staff Will Get Britain Back to Work,' Claims Cameron

David Cameron plans to get Britain back to work by making it easier to sack staff in the first two years of their employment.

The Prime Minister's proposed 'employers’ charter' will allow companies to get rid of workers without the threat of being taken to an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal.

Under current legislation, an employee can bring an unfair dismissal claim against an employer after only a year, so the Coalition wants to double the leeway given to firms.

And as a deterrent to sacked workers seeking 'vexatious claims' a charge to take companies to an employment tribunal will also be introduced.

Cameron, believes that by relaxing the laws on employment, companies will be encouraged to take on thousands more staff.

As part of the shake-up of employment law, there is also expected to be a reduction in the length of time that firms have to pay workers statutory sick pay - currently at least £79.15 for up to 28 weeks - while some small companies could be released from some shackling employment laws altogether.'

Saudi Arabia Bans Blogging Without a Licence

Freedom of speech organizations are condemning a decision by the Saudi Arabian government to force all online ewspapers and bloggers to register with the Ministry of Culture and Information.

Under the new rules, to be introduced next month, all online writers - and this appears to include forums and even short messaging - will need a licence, valid for up to three years.

The Saudi government says the move is simply designed to protect society - and points out that it was already censoring content anyway. Saudi Arabia has one of the highest numbers of bloggers in the Arabic world.

Applicants for a licence need to be Saudi, at least 20 years old and to have graduated from high school. They will also need 'documents testifying to their good behaviour'. Editors of online newspapers will need to be approved by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

Anyone caught blogging without a licence will be subject to a fine of up to 100,000 Riyal ($26,665), and/or a ban - possibly forever.'

A coalition of seven major public pension systems called on the boards of directors of Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), Citigroup (NYSE: C), JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) to immediately undertake independent examinations of the banks’ mortgage and foreclosure practices.

Led by New York City Comptroller John C. Liu on behalf of the five NYC Pension Funds, the coalition also includes the Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds, the Illinois State Board of Investment, the Illinois State Universities Retirement System, the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the North Carolina Retirement Systems, and the Oregon Public Employees Retirement Fund.

The coalition of pension funds called for the banks’ Audit Committees to launch independent examinations of their loan modification, foreclosure, and securitization policies and procedures.'
