Israel Imposes Nine-Day Blockade on West Bank

Israel imposes a 9-day full blockade of the occupied West Bank starting Sunday night, ostensibly as a security measure for the Jewish Passover festival.

The lockdown, on the orders of the Israeli War Minister Ehud Barak, will prevent thousands of Palestinian workers based in the West Bank from reaching their places of work.

The closure will be lifted only after another security assessment following the Passover holiday, the Israeli army said in a statement on Sunday.'

The one hitch in the whole thing though, the one fly in the ointment making an otherwise earth-shattering/stop the presses/we-interrupt-this-program-for-this-breaking-news-report eventa non-starter as far as Jewish groups are concerned is that in this case the characters in question were not “Islamo-fascists,” neo-Nazi skinheads, Aryan Nations Stormtroopers or any of the other “hate-groups” on the seek-and-destroy list meticulously maintained by Jewish groups such as the ADL, JDL, Simon Wiesenthal Center or SPLC. Rather, they happened to be dual-citizen/single-loyalty white trash American Jews visiting Israel.

Israeli ' Death to Arabs' Facebook Group

The messages posted on the group’s homepage are calling for the killing of Arabs and Leftists. There is a debate amongst the group members, on whether all Arabs should be killed, or only some, while the rest should be deported. The photos uploaded to the group show the late racist Rabbi Meir Kahana and a small Meretz demonstration.

The important thing here is not that there are some several hundred racists in Israel, who wish to see the Arabs gone. We always had those - Kahana followers, transfer supporters, etc. The thing is that these people are not just scribbling graffiti in the dark anymore. They are registered to a public group, with their name and their picture, where all their friends can see them (for those of you who don’t use Facebook – when someone joins a group on the site, all his friends get notified. In this case, they will all see some sort of statues line, declaring that “X has joined the group ‘Death to Arabs’”). The people on this group don’t think that they need to hide. They don’t think that there is anything wrong with racism, hate-talk or incitement. In fact, they are rather proud of it.

The group looks as though it is five months old. It currently has 2,165 members. It seems that most of them are minors – your normal Israeli teens. Soon they will join the army.

Israel Warns EU to Tone Down its Criticism

Israel warned the European Union on Thursday to tone down its criticism of the new Israeli government or risk forfeiting the bloc's role as broker in Mideast peace efforts.

The warning came after EU's commissioner for external relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, this week criticized Israel's refusal to endorse a Palestinian state. She said an upgrade in Israeli-EU relations would depend on Israel's commitment to the "two-state solution."

It also came ahead of a planned trip to Europe next week by Israel's foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman - his first official trip abroad. The ultranationalist Lieberman's comments about Arabs and Mideast peace have raised international concerns about the new Israeli Cabinet's intentions.

Israeli Police to Halt Arab Jerusalem Events

Israeli police warned on Friday it would not allow the Palestinians to hold cultural events in east Jerusalem to mark the city's designation as the 2009 "capital of Arab culture."
"Police will deploy reinforcements in Jerusalem tomorrow to prevent any Palestinian attempt to hold official activities," police spokesman Smulik ben Rubi said.

Black farmer quizzed by police THREE times on suspicion of stealing food from his own field

As a farmer, David Mwanaka believes he is unusual - one of only two black ones in the whole of Britain.
In fact, he is such a rare sight that three times in five days he found himself being questioned by police who accused him of stealing crops.
On one occasion, he claimed, four patrol cars turned up at the farm where he rents land to grow maize, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and sweetcorn.
He said yesterday that he had been reported by people 'who are not used to seeing a black man working in a farmer's field'.
