Prosecutors Recommend Indictment of Berlusconi

Italian prosecutors have recommended the indictment of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi for tax fraud and embezzlement in his Mediaset TV station.

Prosecutors have requested that the case against Berlusconi and 11 other people, including his son Pier Silvio, be sent for trial, court sources said on Friday.

If indicted, Berlusconi is unlikely to stand trial, because his lawyers can invoke a new law that shields the premier from criminal prosecution for up to 18 months.'

200,000 Rally in Rome to Say 'Enough' to Berlusconi

Tens of thousands of Italians have taken to the streets of Rome to protest a court decision to adjourn Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's trial for a month.

Tens of thousands of Italians congregated on Saturday in Piazza del Popolo in central Rome to protest against Berlusconi under a banner reading "Enough. The law is the same for everyone."

Organizers put the turnout at 200,000.'

Systematic Destruction Of Internet Freedom

The ruling was the first of its kind in history and was condemned by critics as "the biggest threat to internet freedom we have seen".

America's ambassador to Italy, David Throne, condemned the decision, saying that freedom of the internet was vital for democracy.

The trial centred on footage posted on Google Videos, of an autistic teenager and who was being bullied by four other boys, at a Turin school.

The footage was posted in September 2006 and became the most viewed where it remained for two months before finally being removed.

Prosecutors in Milan brought the case after being contacted by the charity Viva Down and argued that the boys privacy had been violated and that Google should have removed the footage quicker than it eventually did.'

Italy To Require Anyone Who Uploads Video To The Internet To Obtain Government Authorization

New rules to be introduced by government decree will require people who upload videos onto the Internet to obtain authorization from the Communications Ministry similar to that required by television broadcasters, drastically reducing freedom to communicate over the Web, opposition lawmakers have warned.

The decree is ostensibly an enactment of a European Union (EU) directive on product placement and is due to go into effect at the end of January after being subjected to a nonbinding appraisal by parliament.'

Many Italian Physicians Reject Swine Flu Vaccine

Italian family physicians refuse to prescribe the A/H1N1 vaccine for their patients, claiming that the risks of the vaccine outweigh its benefits.

Latest figures revealed that swine flu has infected more than 540,000 individuals, claiming the lives of 30 in Italy.

The country has ordered some 48 million doses of the A/H1N1 vaccine, enough to immunize 24 million of its population, and plans to start a mass vaccination program in the coming weeks.

Italian media outlets have, however, claimed that many of these vaccines would be useless as the majority of Italians including the Deputy Health Minister Ferruccio Fazio and the Mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno have decided against vaccination.'

Thousands to March on Rome in Protest at Berlusconi’s Press Clampdown

Thousands of protesters are expected to march through Rome today to defend press freedom and demand answers from Silvio Berlusconi about his conduct.

Dario Fo, the Nobel prize-winning playwright, and Roberto Saviano, the author of the Mafia exposé Gomorrah, will lead the demonstration, which is expected to attract 300 coachloads of protesters from across Italy.

Italy's Ex-President: CIA and Mossad Ran 9/11

Former Italian President Francesco Cossiga, who revealed the existence of Operation Gladio, has told Italy's oldest and most widely read newspaper that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were run by the CIA and Mossad, and that this was common knowledge among global intelligence agencies. In what translates awkwardly into English, Cossiga told the newspaper Corriere della Sera:

"All the [intelligence services] of America and Europeknow well that the disastrous attack has been planned and realized from the Mossad, with the aid of the Zionist world in order to put under accusation the Arabic countries and in order to induce the western powers to take part in Iraq [and] Afghanistan."

Mr Berlusconi made the serious gaffe on German television station N-TV.

He told the reporter: "[The victims] have everything they need. They have medical care, hot food ... of course, their current lodgings are a bit temporary, but they should see it like a weekend of camping."

Monday's earthquake killed more than 270 people, injured more than 1000 and left 28,000 people homeless.

Seismologist Was Forced to Remove Italy Earthquake Warning From the Internet

After an earthquake in the Abruzzo region of Italy killed at least 100 people, a local scientist is demanding an apology from authorities and saying that he was forced to take his warnings off the Internet.

A week ago, Gioacchino Giuliani (some news reports are calling him Giampaolo Giuliani), a seismologist at the nearby Gran Sasso National Laboratory, predicted that a large quake could occur soon after several small tremors. According to Reuters, his warning prompted vans with loudspeakers telling residents to leave their homes.

Authorities, however, told locals that the tremors were not unusual, accused Mr. Giuliani of “spreading alarm” and forced him to take his findings off the Internet.

Italy has declared a state of emergency after a massive earthquake struck north of Rome during the night leaving dozens dead.

By 0830 GMT, five hours after the quake struck, at least 27 people were reported to have been killed, with the death toll rising steadily as the morning progressed.

Italy's Red Cross Starts Mass Vaccination of Gypsy Children

Italy’s Red Cross has launched its biggest vaccination programme since the second world war, with the goal of immunising several thousand gypsy children living in camps around Rome.
The operation began at Casilino 900, a camp on the eastern outskirts of the capital that is believed to be one of the largest gypsy settlements in Europe. Some two dozen doctors were among 200 Red Cross volunteers that included clowns to provide entertainment in one of the big tents erected for the exercise.

Is the U.S. Paying Off the Italian Government for Forging the Niger Documents

"Obama Confronts a Choice on Copters" read this week's New York Times. The President soon "will have to decide whether to proceed with some of the priciest aircraft in the world -- a new fleet of 28 Marine One helicopters that will each cost more than the last Air Force One....The choice confronting Mr. Obama encapsulates the tension between two imperatives of his nascent presidency, the need to meet the continuing threats of an age of terrorism and the demand for austerity in a period of economic hardship."

This is a gross misrepresentation of the choice Obama faces. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn) and others have alleged that the contract for 28 Marine One helicopters was awarded to the Italian firm Finmeccanica as a thank you for Italy's participation in the Iraq War. The evidence, however, indicates that the contract was more specifically a payoff to the Italian government for supplying the forged documents showing Saddam had obtained weapons grade uranium from Niger. President Bush famously used this fraudulent "yellowcake" intelligence to justify launching the war.

Italy Considers Legalising Vigilante Groups

Unauthorised patrols of several northern Italian cities have been underway for the last year and authorities have turned a blind eye to them as concerned locals fight back against rising crime rates.
Under the proposals by the anti-immigration Northern League, the vigilante patrols would have the backing of the local police. The plan is now to be considered by the Italian Upper House.
Another controversial proposal by the Northern League the introduction of a referendum before a mosque or other place of worship is built.
The League is part of centre right Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's coalition. Mr Berlusconi was elected on a tough law and order campaign.
