Anger at 'Cloak of Secrecy' for Freemason Judges

Jack Straw's decision to no longer force applicants for the judiciary to declare if they are Freemasons was today branded a "disgrace" by a Labour MP.

Gordon Prentice (Pendle) said there would again be a "cloak of secrecy" following the move by the Justice Secretary.

Mr Straw said last week that a review had shown no evidence of "impropriety or malpractice" as a result of a judge being a Freemason and it would be "disproportionate" to continue with the practice, introduced in 1998.

The United Grand Lodge of England made representations to ministers in May and indicated it might seek judicial review of the policy.'

Fiji Freemasons Held for Sorcery

A group of freemasons have had to spend a night in jail in Fiji, after local villagers complained they were practising witchcraft.

The 14 men, including eight Australians and a New Zealander, had been holding a night-time meeting on Denerau island.

The New Zealand man told reporters he had spent a "wretched" time in jail, and blamed the mix-up on the actions of "dopey village people".

Police also seized wands, compasses and a skull from the freemasons' lodge.

Freemasonry is a centuries-old club that practises secret rituals and has more than five million members worldwide.

Phi beta Kappa and the Masonic Hierarchy

Want to see a who's-who list of the most powerful people in American history? Check out the list of members in the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity. Elluminati points out in a recent blog posting that 5 out of the past 6 Presidents are either PBK initiates or sons of one (including Obama).
