Elie Wiesel urged Hungary's leaders to do more to combat racism and anti-Semitism, and also to consider banning Holocaust denial.

British Bishop Richard Williamson to Go On Trial in Germany for Holocaust Denial

British Holocaust-denying bishop Richard Williamson faces trial in Germany for an outspoken TV interview in which he denied that the wartime extermination of the Jews took place.
The ultra-conservative Catholic cleric was hit with a fine of nearly £12,000 today by a court for his comments made to a Swedish television interviewer - but he refused to pay it.
Because Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany - and because he gave the interview while on German soil - he was prosecuted in Regensburg, near to the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI, where he gave the interview.'

Hungarian Lawmakers Reject Holocaust Denial Law

Hungary's lawmakers rejected constitutional amendments to make Holocaust denial a punishable offense.

Some local Jewish community leaders believe that Monday's vote secured the first parliamentary victory for Jobbik, a rapidly rising local neo-Nazi movement widely predicted to win several seats in the national elections due within a year.

The proposals, put forth by the ruling Socialist caretaker government, attracted fewer than half the votes needed to adopt a constitutional amendment.

Austrian writer Gerd Honsik has been found guilty by a court in Australia of "denying the Holocaust and spreading Nazi ideas".

The court in Vienna sentenced the ultra-rightist author to five years in jail on Monday.

Obama Vows to Battle Holcaust Denial

US President Barack Obama spoke at a Holocaust Remembrance Day event at the US Capitol Thursday, and said he was committed to battling those who deny the atrocities of World War II.
"To this day, there are those who insist the Holocaust never happened, who perpetrate every form of intolerance," the president said. "We have an opportunity as well as an obligation to confront these scourges… That is my commitment as president."

ADL Slams Archbishop Who Said More Catholics Than Jews Died in Holocaust

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) hascondemned the words of a Brazilian Catholic Archbishop who suggested in a magazine interview that "more Catholics than Jews have died in the Holocaust, but this is usually not told because Jews own the world's propaganda."

In a statement released Wednesday, the ADL said the remarks by Archbishop Dadeus Grings of Porto Alegre, Brazil, highlight the continuing fallout from the case of Bishop Richard Williamson, who declared that no Jews were killed in the gas chambers during the Holocaust.

"We warned last month that every day that goes by in which Bishop Williamson fails to publicly recant his Holocaust denial only gives license to others to engage in Holocaust denial," stated ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman. "Now we seeanother Catholic cleric distorting the Holocaust."

"The church must take strong and public action against these Holocaust deniers who represent the Catholic Church to the world," continued the statement. "It is especially important that Pope Benedict make it clear that there will be consequences for those clergy who engage inHolocaust denial."

Suspected Holocaust Denier Wins His Legal Fight Against Extradition After Judge Throws Case Out Of Court

An alleged Holocaust denier has won his fight against extradition to Germany.
Dr Gerald Toben, 64, is accused of publishing anti-Semitic material on his website.
The Australian academic is wanted in Germany to stand trial for posting the alleged items between 2000 and 2004.
The German authorities claim they are 'of an anti-Semitic and/or revisionist nature'.

In the European Arrest Warrant issued in October 2004, he is accused of approving of or playing down the murder of the Jews by the Nazis.
But District Judge Daphne Wickham ruled the warrant invalid today at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London, saying it contained inadequate detail about the offences.
It neither states the name of the website nor where the propaganda is said to have been published from - only referring to the 'world-wide internet'.
After discharging Toben, Judge Wickham granted him bail pending an appeal after imposing strict conditions which include a £100,000 security.
Other conditions include residence at an approved address, written confirmation from the Australian High Commission of which passports he holds, and not to access the internet.
He is also banned from giving press interviews.
Judge Wickham added that she had not been required to decide at this stage whether the alleged crimes were valid extradition offences.

Another Holocaust Denier On Trial

Horst Mahler, the former lawyer of the neo-Nazi party NPD and a figure of the extreme-right in Germany, went on trial in the city of Potsdam, southwest of Berlin, on charges of Holocaust denial.
The 72-year-old Mahler, is prosecuted for “incitement to racial hatred ", the magistrates' court said, adding that he is accused of having published on the Internet several texts denying the Holocaust.

A founding member of the Red Army Faction terrorist group in 1970 before turning neo-Nazi, Mahler is accused of regularly posting documents online between 2001 and 2004.

Denial of the Holocaust is a crime in Germany and Mahler faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

Nobody Is Safe From The Long Arm Of EU Law

Here is something the Government told us would never happen. When Britain signed up to the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) six years ago, critics pointed out that an individual could be extradited to another EU state to face prosecution for something that is not a crime in Britain and had not even been committed in the requesting country. Ministers dismissed such concerns as fanciful, but it has come to pass.
An Australian teacher is currently in jail in London, following his arrest at Heathrow airport by British police acting on a warrant issued by the German authorities.
Gerald Töben, 64, is wanted in Germany for the offence of "Holocaust denial". It used to be a fundamental protection in British law that no one would be sent for trial in another jurisdiction for something that is not an offence here. It was called the principle of dual criminality. However, when the EAW was drawn up this principle was removed for a list of 32 offences, which include the crimes of "racism and xenophobia".

A German-born Australian citizen, Fredrick Tˆben, was arrested as he passed through Heathrow by British police acting under an EU arrest warrant issued by the German authorities.

Holocaust Denier Arrested

AUSTRALIAN Holocaust revisionist Gerald Fredrick Toben has been arrested at London's Heathrow airport.
British police executed a European Union arrest warrant issued by German authorities at Heathrow late last night Melbourne time.
The arrest warrant accuses 64-year-old Toben of publishing material on the internet "of an anti-Semitic and/or revisionist nature" in Australia, Germany and other countries.
The alleged Holocaust denier was to appear later at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court.
Toben, a former teacher in Victoria, has been involved in lengthy court proceedings in Australia for allegedly denying the Holocaust, and was jailed in Germany in 1999.
