Pope's Preacher: Abuse Critique Like Anti-Semitism

Pope Benedict XVI's personal preacher on Friday likened accusations against the pope and the Catholic church in the sex abuse scandal to "collective violence" suffered by the Jews.

The Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa said in a Good Friday homily with the pope listening in St. Peter's Basilica that a Jewish friend wrote to him to say the accusations remind him of the "more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism".'

Is Quoting the Talmud Anti-Semitic?

Should one be defined as anti-Semitic for quoting from Talmud texts that preach for committing or justifying crimes? Texts that define the Talmud supporters – at least – as collaborators, or even instigators to commit, a crime?

Canadian Jewish Congress Organized Nazis Party

In 1965 and 1966, the Canadian Jewish Congress helped organize the fledgling Canadian Nazi Party. That sounds crazy, but it's true, and I wrote about it in Shakedown, my new book about Canada's human rights commissions.

In a letter to the editor in the Citizen last week, the CJC's current co-president, Rabbi Reuven Bulka, called my book's description of the CJC's role "fiction." He said all the CJC did for the Nazis was buy them a bottle of rum.

It's true that the CJC did buy drinks for Nazis in the 1960s. That's pretty strange in itself, and I'd like to hear more of Rabbi Bulka's thoughts on spending Jewish charitable donations that way. But the CJC did a lot more than that: they hired an ex-cop named John Garrity to go to work for the Canadian Nazi Party.

In Israel, Obama is Accused of 'anti-Semitism'

An Israeli parliamentarian accuses the Obama administration of 'anti-Semitism' ahead of a planned speech addressing the Muslim world.

Knesset (parliament) member Yaakov Katz, head of the National Union party, said Wednesday that US President Barack Obama's repeated calls for halting the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank is "nothing less than anti-Semitism," Israel's Arutz Sheva reported.

He also accused the White House of following the path of his predecessors in stunting the growth of the population of Jewish people in the West Bank.

Katz says calling on Tel Aviv to freeze settlement activities means denying the Jewish people the right to give birth.

House Passes Hate Crime Bill - Jewish Groups Rejoice

Jewish groups are hailing House passage of hate-crimes legislation.

The House passed the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act by a vote of 249-175 on Wednesday. The legislation would permit greater federal involvement in investigating hate crimes and expand the federal definition of such crimes to include those motivated by gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.

The Anti-Defamation League, Jewish Council for Public Affairs and Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism all lauded the vote. In a statement, ADL national director Abraham Foxman and national chair Glen Lewy said it was an "essential and necessary step forward in the national effort to counter hate crimes."

British Government Calls Summit Over Rising Anti-Semitism

Anti-Semitism has become such a problem that the Foreign Office welcomed nearly 100 legislators from 35 countries to a conference this week aimed at tackling the issue.

The inaugural conference of the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA) is the first of its kind to receive such prominent Government support.

If there were a Nobel Prize for Hypocrisy, Abraham Foxman would have been a great candidate. The director of the Anti-Defamation League, who once interpreted even International Holocaust Remembrance Day as an expression of the Gentiles' latent desire to see Jews dead, has published a new survey on anti-Semitism in Europe [.pdf].

One of the assertions respondents were asked to agree or disagree with was "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country"; an affirmative response was considered indicative of anti-Semitism.

Anti Defamation League Calls 'Smash-Me Bernie' Figurine Anti-Semitic

No sooner than a toy manufacturer introduced its 'Smash-Me Bernie' Madoff Doll at a toy fair in New York this week did the ADL's Abraham Foxman spring into action.

The ADL just issued this press release. The smashing of Jewish figurines is anti-Semitic regardless of how heinous the figurines underlying crime happens to be.

If figurine hate is allowed to stand the next thing you know the toy hate industry will be introducing 'Smash-Me Ehud', 'Smash-Me Bibi', and Smash-Me Ariel dolls. This is just unacceptable. What's next Gas-Me Dershowitz and Foxman dolls?

Congress is expected to unanimously vote in favor of Aipac sponsored toy hate crime legislation later this morning.
