Scrapping ID Cards Won't Save Billions, Tories Warned

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said the majority of the scheme, and spending, will have to go ahead because it relates to passports and dropping ID cards would only save £1.1bn.

The Conservatives accused Ms Smith of "poison pill" tactics to increase the costs of a future Tory administration.

During Commons question time, Ms Smith said the Government was "on track" to introduce ID cards this autumn.

Funny isn't it how they try and make out that a saving of £1.1 Billion pounds is just a tiny amount. I'd rather save 1.1 billion and then hav to pay £40 million than have id cards introduced, wouldn't you??
