Ministers are considering offering crisis loans to help cash-strapped charities to survive the recession.
Many have been forced to cut services and make redundancies because of a collapse in donations.
Kevin Brennan, the minister responsible for charities, confirmed this weekend that he was looking at extending the £1 billion emergency loan package for small businesses announced in Alistair Darling’s prebudget report last month. The government is also looking at giving grants to fund mergers between similar voluntary groups.
