More Than 50,000 On DNA Database In Lincolnshire

The number of DNA samples from Lincolnshire people in the national police database has now grown to more than 50,000.
So far this year, police have added 5,109 samples of genetic material taken from suspects in criminal investigations.
And in 2007 they added 6,926 samples, compared with 6,597 in 2006.
The total of samples on file is now 51,179, although not all DNA samples added to the database relate to people who live in the county.
However, questions are being asked whether people cleared of criminal charges should be forced to remain on the list.

Currently, any person arrested for a chargeable offence will have their DNA taken, which is then kept in the database even if they are released with no further charge.
The database doesn't just cover your genetic footprint; it also holds details of a person's name, date of birth, sex and ethnic appearance.
