UK Government to Impose Orwellian-style Surveillance

The Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition is pushing ahead with plans to allow Britain’s security services and police to spy on the activities of every citizen who uses a phone or the Internet. The secret services and police will have unlimited powers to track every single phone call, email, text message and website visit made by anybody in the UK.

The plans were contained within last month’s “Strategic Defence and Security Review” in which the government stated, “We will introduce a programme to preserve the ability of the security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies to obtain communication data and to intercept communications within the appropriate legal framework.”

They are based on reviving, with a few modifications, the Intercept Modernisation Programme (IMP) first proposed in 2006 by the previous Labour government. The government is implementing this massive surveillance dragnet, despite making an election pledge that it would not do so. The pledge was specifically cited in the “Coalition Agreement” for government, published May 12.'

Swedish Newspaper Bomb Threat Traced to Police

Last Wednesday the offices of the Norrländska Socialdemokraten (NSD) newspaper in Luleå were evacuated after the newspaper received a bomb threat via email.

The police were called to investigate, taking with them specially trained bomb-sniffing dogs, but by Wednesday evening investigators concluded the threat was a hoax.

But the story took a new twist on Monday when it was revealed that the IP-address associated with the threatening message is affiliated with police headquarters in Luleå.

“We’re now looking at all of our internet terminals, around 35 of them,” Norbotten police spokesperson Roger Jönsson told the TT news agency.'

Alcohol More Harmful to Health Than Crack Cocaine and Heroin

Scientists from Britain's Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD) recently released a study that assessed which drugs cause the most overall harm to both users and society. According to their analysis, alcohol is the most harmful drug, scoring higher on the list than both crack cocaine and heroin.

Published in the journal Lancet, the study used a system called multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) to assess damage caused by various drugs. Nine of the criteria evaluated specific harm inflicted on users of the drug, while seven criteria looked at the harm caused to others. Upon investigation, alcohol scored nearly three times more harmful than cocaine and eight times more harmful than ecstasy.'

US Seeks to Up Military Role in Yemen

Media reports say support is growing in the US military and the Obama administration for allowing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to control elite special forces secretly in Yemen.

Allowing US Special Operations Command units to operate under the CIA would also give the United States greater leeway to strike without the explicit blessing of the Yemeni government, the paper said.

The White House is already considering adding armed CIA drones to the arsenal against militants in Yemen.'

An innocent Iranian woman held in the US for about three years says she is kept under horrible conditions and is subject to both physical and mental torture.

Shahrzad Mir-Qolikhan was arrested in the US in December 2007. Her ex-husband, Mahmoud Seif, had allegedly tried to export night-vision goggles to Iran from Austria.

Debt Collectors Accused Of Fake Courtroom, Judge

A sign in the front of a building on West 39th Street tells visitors that it's the Unicredit Debt Resolution Center in Erie.

Once debtors got inside, they were fooled into believing they were in a courtroom with a judge, but the whole thing was a fake, according to a lawsuit filed by the Pennsylvania attorney general.

Russia should be allowed to enter a strategic alliance with Nato, according to a new report.

The report, by the International Institute of Security Studies (IISS) and the Russian Institute of Contemporary Studies, envisages the creation of a “common security community from Vancouver to Vladivostok”.

It claims Cold War mistrust should be replaced with a focus on common ground, suggesting the new alliance could tackle questions such as Nato force withdrawal from Afghanistan, distrust over Iran, global arms supply and the reduction of weapon of mass destruction.

The number of those injured in a bomb blast at a main square in the business Turkish city of Istanbul has reached 32.

The casualties included 17 civilians and 15 policemen, US daily The New York Times said on Sunday. The wounded were sent to four nearby hospitals.

A device found in the U.K. on a United Parcel Service Inc. plane bound for Chicago on Friday was designed to go off on the aircraft, Prime Minister David Cameron said Saturday. U.K. Home Secretary Theresa May added that the device was powerful enough to bring down the aircraft.



The U.K. doesn't believe it was being targeted in the incident because the attackers couldn't have known the route of the plane.

"We believe that the device was designed to go off on the airplane," Mr. Cameron said. "We cannot be sure about the timing when that was meant to take place. There is no early evidence it was designed to take place over British soil, but of course we cannot rule that out".

Israeli Settlers Burn Church in Jerusalem

A hundred year old church was burned Friday by right-wing Israeli settlers, who broke a number of windows of the church and hurled Molotov cocktails inside.

The damage to the church was substantial, with burn damage throughout the first floor of the building.

The church was built in Jerusalem in 1897, and housed the Palestinian Bible College until 1947, when parishioners were pushed out by Jewish armed gangs during the violence accompanying the creation of the state of Israel.'

UAE Rejects US Claims on Flight 201

The United Arab Emirates' Civil Aviation Authority has rejected claims that a US-bound Emirates' flight from Dubai contained "suspicious" parcels from Yemen.

Emirati authorities, however, said flight 201 carried no 'suspicious' cargo from Yemen as claimed by US-Canadian military agency NORAD.

UAE officials rejected the claim and said the plane was not a source of threat.

"The Emirates plane that arrived today in the United States from Dubai did not contain any packages from Yemen," the official Emirati WAM news agency quoted an unnamed source with the country's civil aviation body as saying.

Meanwhile, the US president hinted at boosting the US military role in Yemen following reports about the "suspicious packages".'

Germany Seals Taliban Funding Deal

Germany's foreign ministry says it has signed an agreement with Afghanistan to give 14 million dollars to Taliban militants, who lay down their arms, every year.

Berlin says the contract will be valid for five years and the cash will only be paid to militants who lay down their weapons.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said earlier that reintegrating former militants into the Afghan social and political fabric is crucial to stabilizing Afghanistan, DPA reported.

However, the funding goes against the stated goal of the NATO mission in Afghanistan, which was to hunt down al-Qaeda militants and to root out the Taliban.'
