There is strong and "credible" evidence of the "systemic" torture and abuse of hundreds of Iraqis by British troops while in detention, the High Court in London heard yesterday.
Michael Fordham QC, representing over 200 Iraqis, said that a full independent public inquiry into the abuse claims was "legally necessary" and that there was "no lawful justification for delaying its establishment."
Mr Fordham said: "There are credible allegations of serious, inhumane practices across a whole range of dates and facilities concerning British military detention in Iraq".'
