Shutting one's embassy is what one does right before a war is declared against the country in which that embassy exists.

However, unfortunately, we are not declaring a war against a country per se, but against its people.

"President" Selah and his minions are known to operate one of the most corrupt governments in the Middle East. There are staggering levels of poverty and illiteracy here. Selah and the rest of his government have absolutely no interest in creating some degree of hope for their people.

Up till now, Saleh was "our man in Yemen", because the US could generally count on him to stomp out any opposition movements rather successfully.

However, when peaceful revolution becomes impossible, violent revolution becomes inevitable, and this is precisely what we are seeing happen now.

The US should have been approaching Yemen's government with a carrot/stick approach in terms of encouraging all parties to provide a better infrastructure, more education, and jobs for their people. Of course, that would have been logical.

When you don't have much to lose but your life (and that's not worth one heck of a lot), any organized insurgency can start looking attractive.

But the current situation in Yemen didn't happen overnight.
Someone in the US State Department and the Pentagon should have seen this coming a mile away.
