British Bill to Protect Israelis From Prosecution
The British government will introduce legislation early in the new year to stop Israeli ministers and officials facing arrest for war crimes every time they visit the UK.
The move is intended to calm Israeli fury after Tzipi Livni, the opposition party leader and foreign minister at the time of the Gaza invasion a year ago, was forced to abandon a trip to London this month because pro-Palestinian activists obtained a warrant for her arrest.
Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, and the foreign secretary, David Miliband, have been deeply embarrassed by the incident, saying the threat of legal action against Israeli officials is hampering their efforts to bring peace to the Middle East.'
