Slimmers Warned: EU Suspends Weight-loss Drug Licence Because 'Psychiatric Risks Outweigh Benefits'

Safety chiefs have suspended the use of a weight loss drug over concerns that it may be linked to suicide and sudden death.
Officials said the risk of side effects from the drug, Acomplia, outweighed its benefits.
Almost 100,000 Britons have used the drug since its launch two years ago, when it was hailed as a £2 a day wonder pill.

However, seven deaths, including a suicide, have been associated with the anti-obesity treatment, which also doubles the risk of psychiatric disorders.
Around 2,500 adverse reactions have been reported by British patients since it became available to private buyers two years ago. U.S. authorities refused to approve the drug amid mounting scientific evidence of the suicide dangers.
But just four months ago Acomplia was cleared to be used as a 'last-chance' solution on the NHS by the Government's rationing body, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
