EU to Police All Drivers With Black Boxes

THE European Union is drawing up plans for aircraft-style black box recorders to be fitted to all cars to help the police identify who is responsible for crashes.

A £2.4m, three-year study commissioned by the European commission’s transport arm has recommended the mandatory installation of the boxes in all cars. They will record 20 types of data, including speed, the car’s most recent movements and whether the driver braked or indicated.

The information will be used by police and insurance firms to reconstruct crashes and determine who was at fault. It could then be used in court cases. Insurers would be able to expose bogus claimants by checking their account of an accident against what really happened.

Manchester Says No To Congestion Charge

Road pricing, the Government’s favoured policy for dealing with congestion, has been roundly rejected in a referendum in Manchester. There now appears little chance of any pay-as-you-drive schemes being introduced for the next decade at least.
Manchester’s proposal for peak-time tolls of up to £5 a day was defeated by 4 to 1.

Manchester Revolt Threatens Road Pricing

The future of road pricing is in the balance, with towns and cities across Britain awaiting the result of Manchester’s referendum tomorrow before deciding whether to press ahead with pay-as-you-drive schemes.
The level of response to the postal-only vote in areas of the city where congestion charging is unpopular, such as Trafford and Tameside, has alarmed supporters of the scheme.
