Blair to be Named EU President 'Within Weeks' if Irish Ratify Lisbon Treaty

Tony Blair is set to become EU President within weeks if Ireland votes 'Yes' in its referendum on the Lisbon Treaty tomorrow.

The former prime minister's candidacy for the new post will be rushed through as quickly as possible, according to government sources.
Mr Blair is among the favourites to become the first President of the European Union, a role that is chosen by the EU's 27 leaders and not by voters.

Ryanair Boss Michael O’Leary Accused of Grubby Deal as Irish Prepare for Lisbon Vote

Mr O’Leary had said that it would be undemocratic to make the Irish vote again on the treaty after it was rejected last June. Yet during the second attempt to secure approval for the treaty, which is a repackaging of the rejected European constitution, the Ryanair boss has spent €500,000 (£460,000) on advertisements and free flights to support the “yes” camp.

His admission this week that his motives for backing the “yes”vote included a desire to buy the partly state-owned airline Aer Lingus was seized upon yesterday as evidence of a “grubby deal”.

Berlusconi Advocates Creation of 'Core Europe' if Ireland Says No Again

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has suggested that if the Irish people vote against the Lisbon Treaty a second time, a group of European Union member states should move to create a "core Europe" in order to implement the treaty.

"If the Lisbon Treaty on EU reform does not pass, we need to completely revisit the current functioning of Europe to create a core of states that operate beyond unanimity," said Mr Berlusconi on Friday (18 September) at a press conference after meeting with Premier Slovenian Borut Pahor, according to Italian state broadcaster RAI News 24.

Ganley Rejoins Fight Against EU Treaty

Describing the new EU guarantees obtained by the irish government on Ireland's full sovereignty over moral issues, taxation and military neutrality, the businessman said the Yes forces have "resorted to lying in their desperation."

"[The Yes side has] utter contempt for the democratic decision of the Irish people, the Dutch people, the French people and indeed, all of the citizens of Europe," he said, referring to earlier Irish, Dutch and French No results on EU treaty referendums.

Ryanair Launches Pro-Lisbon Treaty Campaign

Irish cut-price airline Ryanair has said it will spend half a million euros on a campaign backing the Lisbon Treaty ahead of Ireland's second referendum on the document, scheduled for 2 October.

On Wednesday (26 August), the company's chief executive, Michael O'Leary, announced in Dublin his firm will get involved because he does not trust "incompetent" politicians to win the argument alone.
