France Opens Persian Gulf Base Amid Israeli Regional War Threat

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has inaugurated the country's first military base in the Persian Gulf close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Sarkozy opened the 500-man military base in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The facility is to house navy, army, and air force personnel.

The French presence is said to be aimed at providing only 'support and training' and not taking part in actual military operations unless the Persian Gulf state is attacked.
